Moving to Yeovil, Somerset

DH has just been offered a new job near Yeovil in Somerset so we need to move. I don't know the area, so wondered if anyone could recommend places in Yeovil and surrounding towns/villages to avoid/head for? Thanks all x

I'm not keen on Yeovil but there are some lovely villages nearby.
Sherbourne is especially lovely. I'd do a Rightmove search from there.

It really depends on your needs really and your budget! Do you need transport links/schools/social life/village life? It really is a beautiful area to live, particularly on the yeovil/dorset border and near to the dorset coast is always a bonus i think! Let us know what sort of radius of Yeovil and happy to try and help!

Sunnyshores · 15/01/2014 14:55

I dont like Yeovil itself either, but the surrounding villages are lovely and if you prefer somewhere bigger Dorchester & Sherborne are nice. It really depends on how close DH needs to be to Yeovil.

Herhonesty · 15/01/2014 14:57

Yeovil is a hole. But some nice villages around it.

Agree with other posters and remember to steer clear of those places which can be badly affected by flooding, especially around the Somerset Levels.

IHeartKingThistle · 15/01/2014 19:03

Avoid Yeovil itself! I'm from a village nearby, there are some gorgeous ones. I'd find out about lifestyle/schools rather than going by prettiness alone though!

If it was me, with children, having lived in one of the tiny villages, I'd probably check out South Petherton (large village). I also really like Illminster (small town).

Hi all. Thank for the responses so far. We need to be within 30 minutes of Yeovil for my (prospective) new job and need to be on the Somerset side (I love Dorset, particularly the idea of moving to Sherbourne) as DHs job will be county wide and traveling from Dorchester to Minehead etc will just be too much of a trudge.

We've seen some lovely homes (online) in Ilminster, but it seems a lot cheaper than other areas and so I wondered if there was something wrong with it?!?! Or perhpas sometimes a potato is just a potato.
I'll be working PT and have a 10 month old dd and so would want somewhere with at least a couple of shops and nursey/childminders and preferably some activities to do with dd (playgroup or park to go to etc etc)
Thanks again fro all your help. Feeling less dunted already :-)

If you lived somewhere like Ilminster or South Petherton that also brings you into better access to the M5 and also Taunton, which is a much better town than Yeovil.

I agree with what others have said, although there are some nice parts of Yeovil (on the outskirts) but most of it is a dive. I would recommend Sherbourne if you are looking for somewhere a bit quitter but with a few shops on your doorstep but it is very expensive (to buy or rent), Ilminster is ok, also Sparkford (just along the A303), Martock and theres a lot of small villages on the outskirts of Yeovil (you could still be close to Yeovil and nursery's etc...?

HobbitWorrier · 16/01/2014 09:10

South Petherton ish would be my choice then as you are then on the A303 quicker access to the M5. I personally don't like Ilminster but thats only an observation from driving through so not really based on anything (not helpful!)

Sunnyshores · 16/01/2014 13:57

I dont like Illminster or Taunton either I'm afraid, they're just a bit dull and uninspiring - I dont what villages are like that side though.

I know your babys young, but its only a few years before school (sorry!) and assuming you're not moving on again, I'd make that a priority.

Really would suggest Sherborne its lovely (despite DH).....

BikeRunSki · 16/01/2014 19:21

My mum lives in Castle Cary, and I would happily live there.

dontcallmemam · 16/01/2014 19:54

Oh yes. Castle Carey is really lovely. But maybe the wrong side of Yeovil, although only 15 mins from A303.

Herhonesty · 17/01/2014 21:16

South petherton is nice, montacute, queen camel,
