Stainless steel worktops, are they a nightmare?

Hi all

I'm planning my new kitchen and am thinking about worktops, I've only ever had laminate and wood before and have never chosen my own kitchen just inherited someone else's taste! It will probably be white gloss (just to be original!) and will be an L shape with an island. I'm hoping to put the hob and sink in the L bit and keep the island clear so I'd like a wooden worktop on the island. I'm thinking about having a stainless steel worktop for the L bit but my friends are telling me it will be a nightmare. Does anyone actually have one and how do you get on with it? I don't want to spend all my time polishing it! Anyone got any other suggestions? Budget is very tight, the kitchen will be Ikea, but I don't want laminate, and don't want wood near the sink (had that before, nightmare!)

Thanks for your help!

I love stainless steel work tops, I have a section from IKEA, but are you aware that it will scratch and get a "patina"? I was looking into redoing my kitchen and when I costed how much it would be it certainly didn't fit into the budget category!

Poppy I would love to know where you got yours!

We absolutely love ours. We have wooden worktops in the rest of the kitchen but have a 140 cm stainless steel worktop including the sink. This gives us plenty of space to on either side of the sink for dirty dishes or drying the washing up

However, if you can't live with it looking lived with, it is not the worktop for you. We polish ours to a shine with Method Stainless steel cleaner every evening but can't be bothered to wipe away every splash of water during the day.

www.intra-teka.com/english

We designed our own worktop with sink. With intra's design tool you can get exactly bespoke the worktop you want.

I can't find the tool on the English website, you may need to contact them for the details.
