Hello you lovely people... Anyone living in Peterborough? We want to buy a house there, we have two children of which one will start school in September, we would like to be in the city or anywhere walkable distance, can anyone help in letting me know which are the good areas and where to stay well clear from? xxx

I can help a little as I was born and grew up in Peterborough - I haven't lived there for 25 years but my parents are still there so I go back often.

The nicest areas near to town are Longthorpe, Thorpe Road area and around Central Park. From all of these places you can walk/cycle to the City. It depends on budget as these areas are the most expensive but it is still very cheap compared to the South East.

Peterborough does have an enormous amount of immigrants which I am sure you are aware of. This means that some of the schools will have entire classes of children who have english as a second language.

There is a lovely park called Ferry Meadows - around there is very nice. There are several places near to Ferry Meadows called Orton 'something'. These are all nice.

The villages around Peterborough are really pretty but much more expensive. However, this doesn't help if you want to be in Peterborough itself. There are lots of little hamlets such as Bretton, Werrington, Dogsthorpe. These are all quite similar but not walking distance from town.

Hope that helps a little.

Hi

Am Peterborough born n bred! You could try some of the outer villages like Eye, Crowland, Newborough, Glinton, Hampton is new build, Whittlesey, Thorney, castor, Stamford, wansford, the deepings, all a car journey but worth it not to be in the ailing town centre.
There are some parts I would avoid like Bretton, some of the ortons, Parnwell, dogsthorpe, welland estate.
I haven't lived there for 20 years but have family still based there.
Shopping never used to be to bad, good transport links with London, near the motorway for North and south.

I have to say, I would be hard pushed to move there again, not really my scene. It's an ok City but these days not really upto the standards it used to be!

Good luck

There is also a couple of purpose built traveller sites on the ring road Warrington/Paston side and also over by Fengate (industrial area)
