Business registered to my friends address - how to remove it?

Hi
I'm asking this for a friend and I wasn't sure if it should be in the legal section or in here.

My friend lives in a house that was left to him in his parents will. His parents owned a business which was left to his brother and the business was registered to the house. My friend would like the business to update their registration to the new address but the brothers have fallen out, probably irredeemably and the brother refuses to update it and has ignored a solicitors letter requesting this.

Does anyone know how to get the business removed from the address? It seems to me unlikely that only the business owners can update it but the solicitor didn't suggest any alternatives.

TIA

what sort of business?
I'd just start writing "gone away" and putting any post addressed to it back in the post .... the address will get altered PDQ

The business doesn't get post as far as I know, it's pretty identifying if I were to say what it was so I'm reluctant to. It doesn't have a professional body to report it to, it's something along the lines of a stonemason - actual place of business obviously elsewhere and impractical in a house.

What's currently causing him problems are things like supermarkets refusing delivery to the house as they think it's a business address. Presumably the business address is held on record somewhere they're picking it up from, which I'm assuming will also come up on legal searches on the address.

Is it registered with companies house? If so I would contact them.

sorry but that is utter bilge.

I have two limited companies registered to my home address and I have no problems of any sort like that.

If there is no post coming, what is the actual problem? - sounds like just vindictiveness on both sides.

Companies house will not be interested if he's not part of the business.

I have known supermarkets refuse to a deliver to an address which PAF tells them is business premises.

It is possible that he has a Large User postcode rather than the geographic postcode used by the other houses on that side of the street. In which case you could look up the geographic postcode and use that.

You could advise the Post Office that the business in no longer operating from that address, and it is now an ordinary residential home. Eventually they will correct PAF and eventually it will propage to the Postcode Lookup files used by most businesses. Try the phone no on here

Companies House require the correct address to be registered. If the company and directors are no longer at the registered address, this is wrong and probably an offence. The Company Secretary will be responsible. Write a short letter to Companies House saying that (the address) is now your home since (date) and the company and directors do not own or use it. Request that your address name is taken off the register. Do not complicate matters by telling them of family fallings out. If you happen to know the new business address, or the address of the company secretary, you can tell them. www.companieshouse.gov.uk/
You can look up the names and addresses of directors and the registered address, free

Thank you for the replies and sorry I'm so late coming back to this thread.

TalkInPeace - what was concerning my friend was potential problems should he decide to sell the house.

PigletJohn & BrianTheMole - Thank you - I've looked up the business on companies house and the address is correct there, so the brother has updated it since their parents died. No idea why he couldn't have just told my friend he had done it but I guess that's their relationship problem.

So since the address is correct with companies house, Tesco must be getting the address from the PAF files PigletJohn mentions, I'll pass that phone number onto my friend and hopefully that gets it sorted! Thanks again! Smile Thanks
