How much would built-in cupboards cost?

Has anyone had built-in cupboards fitted either side of a fireplace? I'll probably ask a few local firms for quotes, but thought I would ask for MN experience, just so I don't faint at the price! We are in the South West.

Thinking about something like this

Otherwise, DH says he can build them himself, but it would probably take a long time. Grin His words!

We had one recently built by a local joiner just on one side of our fireplace, three shelves and a cupboard with a shelf inside using oak veneer, quite modern and chunky looking which cost us £350. We are central Scotland.

Ours are similar to that except we have glass fronted doors on them. They are solid oak with a solid oak back too. It was £800 including fitting. We are in the West Midlands.

We are in Bristol and had something very similar to that built last year by a local carpenter. Cost us about £700 for the pair.

MDF is cheaper, especially if you do the painting yourself (takes forever mind).

My H (a decent DIYer) did something very similar in our lounge. Cupboards are slightly higher and the shelving / cupboards attach to the wall directly rather than being built into a frame inside the alcove if you see that I mean. We bought cupboard doors on Ebay, solid hardwood for the shelves, all painted in F&B in All White and we have the wall behind painted in a contrasting colour. I think it cost about £60 or £70 per alcove but it did take a few weeks of (intermittent) evening and weekend. It looks absolutely lovely Smile.

Mandy, that sounds exactly the way it would be in our house. :D

pradaqueen that is a very clever site. The MDF option is definitely appealing pricewise, and I like the way they can provide them primed.

We are about to do a similar thing using ikea cabinets and tarting up with skirting and moulding along the top to make then look built in.

marking place out of interest, had a similarish thread recently as FIL was going to make some cupboards for us and was charging us £800 plus materials for his time and this seemed extortionate mates rates to me so I posted on here about it. We ended out not going with FIL surprise surprise
