Double glazing quote - £6000 for 3 windows???

I've just had a quote of £6k for double glazing for 2 bays and 1 double window. I've never bought double glazing before but it sounds a bit steep. I was expecting it to be closer to the £4k mark.

Would anyone be able to tell me if this is a reasonable price?

are they sash per chance? Are the Bays 3 windows each bay?

Short answer is, it depends! What kind of windows are you having installed in your bays?

For comparison, we had a bay done this year with a central sash (v.good quality upvc, wood-effect etc), a sash upstairs and another small window and the total was £5500.

However, quotes changed depending on the type of window. For comparison, with less 'authentic' looking sashes at £4,200.

Bays are expensive, unfortunately, especially if they are spending time finishing the internal walls nicely.

The bays will be expensive depending on what number of sides they have, openings and decorative glass. Our bay was three sided with three openings and standard toughened glass for £1400. For a double window we paid about 350. This quote does sound high so have you shopped around for quotes?

We paid 10k for 2 bays (3 windows each) one patio door , one back door, one bathroom window.
We used an expensive company. Suspect we could have got itcheaper.

It's not £6 k

Within a week they will have called you back with the 'real' price.

Are the bays structural i.e. 2 storey? This makes a huge difference to the price.

You need alternative quotes. There is guidance and help available...

Here are the legal requirements for replacement windows and the section relating to 'competent persons'.

There are several however most widely known is FENSA

Thanks lauriefairycake, thats's reassuring that they might call back with a better price.

Twobusyboys, thanks that doesn't sound too different to my quote.

Roobywoobie, trackydacks and 2plus1, they are 5 window upvc bays with four openings so I suppose it would be more expensive based on this. They aren't sash windows, we went with the cheapest options and no extras.

The quote was by Anglican windows

Get several more quotes.
Surely you are not considering going with your first and only quote!

Look at local reputable firms, ask around for recommendations.

Also do try a local 'non branded' iykwim firm. You'll get a much better price and service in my experience.

I've heard the stories about Anglian...

Seconding Pendeen's advice - have a look for a smaller/independent firm, FENSA registered, see if they have previous customers for you to have a look at/speak to etc, and get second/third etc opinions and quotes from them.

Thanks flipchart and wild thing, we will be getting more quotes but I they had a 'limited time offer' as the prices are apparently going to rise on January. Sounds like that was just typical double glazing salesman tactics,

Around our estate lots of people have had their windows replaced . We used a fab local
Company and it was £6000 including a window made into a door and a new front door ( composite ) .. They did a brilliant job and we have been really pleased .. They have since done a lovely conservatory ... Anyways some of our neighbours used Anglian and paid £20k !!

The initial quote was 12k. This was then reduced to 10k due to window scrappage scheme. This was then reduced to 6356k due to a 35% discount - we didn't qualify for the full 40% advertised on their website. This was again reduced by the application of two buy it now discount vouchers. Final quote - apparently only valid for 48hrs - was £6056.

Don't deal with any company that does bullshit '48 hr' discounts.

A decent contractor will work on pricung by cost plus reasonable % markup for profit/ risk/ contingency.

The timed deal is a ploy to prevent you shopping around.

I just had my bay windows replaced. It cost me £800 for each set and they are 3 window 2 opening structural windows, we had them done by a local company.

For comparison they also charged us £1k for double French windows (including conversion from a window to a door) £600 for a front door inc windows all around the outside of it and £500 for a back door.

We avoided all the big named companies as it is pressurised sales techniques. Quotes generally stand for a month so 48hrs is just their sales pitch. We went with a local reputable FENSA registered company who were excellent. Defy word of mouth. My friend had Anglian and they made a hash of one of her windows three times! Don't fall for the limited offers and get yourself several local quotes.

we went from 20K to 9K for 5 sash windows. same company as yours.

gave the order to local company for 7.5. Other local companies quoted more or less around this figure.

ps: no use contacting the other national company as they use the same tactics and prices.

We've paid less than that for timber double glazed sashes for our bay window....

Just paid £1900 for 4 flat largish windows, so about £ 500 per window. Local company, Worcestershire.

Dont use Zenith! We were pressured into getting our windows with them a few years ago. Took several hours to get the salesman out of our house. Had all the 'special offer' if you sign up today rubbish. We signed, called to cancel couple of days later, they sent same guy back with more hard sell eventually we said yes to get rid of him! When they did the work it was awful. Took twice as long as they said it would, guys seemed a bit useless. Boss who came to inspect was rude to us. I complained to him and they reduced it by £50 which stupidly we accepted ...
Sorry bit of a rant there! Basically I would never use them again! And I've heard Anglian are very expensive too.
Where are you? South East?? Have had good reports about Crystal and the quote they gave us was competitive, no hard sell. Wish we'd used them instead! Was about 5 years ago though.

We paid £2200 for 3 windows
2 large flat 4sections 4 small top traditional type with 2 top opening and 2 bottom large opening. Mahogany outside white inside also leaded. Had lintel fitted above because they were so large as not to colaspe with weight.
Also small bedroom one with top opening and side opening.
We'll known company in Cheshire. With no pressure to buy just measured and sent quote through post

I wouldn't trust Anybody who give discount price and also somebody who stays hours and try's to get you to sign then. No way
