Any fireplace experts out there?

I have 2 things I am thinking of....

I have a lovely original fire surround in my living room (Edwardian surround). When I first moved in years back I put in a gas fire.

However the gas fire is expensive and doesn't provide much heat. So I am thinking of getting the gas fire removed and getting an open fire grate fitted. Does this sound doable (am yet to contact the fireplace people). Will it be really expensive.

The next question... my kitchen is in a single story extension. It's flipping freezing in there. So dreaming of a log burner. There is no chimney - can this be done? It's against the outside wall. Can a chimney flue thing go straight out?

My friend has a (tall) single storey living room extension & her stove stands in one corner; flue goes up & then out, no probs

Re the fireplace, assuming there is still an open flue up to the chimney (ie the chimney breast in the room above is still there) you should be able to open up & have a fire again (do you have the inner surround as well as the mantelpiece bit?)

open fires have gone out (so to speak..) for a reason - very inefficient. Make that two log burners.

you'll need a HETAS person for a quote. Don't expect much response for the next couple of months.

Dont know about the open fire plan.
The wood burner is certainly doable but its not going to be cheap.

special I have an pretty tiled surround and don't want to loose it which is why I was thinking open fire. DD's childminder has an open fire and their house is always toasty, or maybe mine is always so flipping cold. If I could get a stove there too....

going to call them tomorrow to see when they might be able to come and talk to me in person. So bloody sick of my freezing cold house
