Decisions, decisions - live by the beach or by the school (in NZ)?

I am in Christchurch, New Zealand and we need to find a new rental house. Rentals are quite hard to get here, so have been looking further away from DD's school than normally would have and have narrowed it down to two areas... It's between property like this www.trademe.co.nz/property/residential-property-to-rent/auction-675802873.htm near a lovely park and within walking distance (about 20 mins) of DD's school, near to preschool etc, but old houses here do tend to be very cold (no central heating), and this area is mostly old houses (most of the ones we've seen around here haven't had their earthquake repairs yet and have cracks, are damp etc). This house is quite nice. Any nicer, modern houses would be way out of our budget.

Or, do we move to a beach suburb, lovely houses, 5 minute walk to a sandy beach, sand dunes, big forest to cycle in... and live in a house like this www.trademe.co.nz/property/residential-property-to-rent/auction-673909329.htm. If you google earth them you get a better idea of location). It would mean a 15/20 min drive to school each day though... One of the other children in DD's class does the commute, so we could lift share.
And yes, those prices are per week (halve it to get in pounds) Shock.

What would you do? I think we are leaning towards the lifestyle choice at the beach...

It sounds like you really want to go to the beach - a 15 min drive in Christchurch is really stress free compared to a 15 min drive almost anywhere in the UK. I'm in Adelaide and laugh my head off at the people here who complain about traffic - they've never done London - Brighton on a Bank Holiday so hahahahahaha.

Mrsladybirdface · 18/12/2013 22:15

beach! 15/20 mins commute isn't that bad in reality.

Those houses would be more expensive here in wet Gloucestershire if that makes you feel better Smile Smile

The beach. Definitely. It would be amazing for the kids. And a lift share is even better!

OddFodd · 18/12/2013 22:19

I'd definitely go for the beach. I live by the beach (in the UK) and it's fabulous. I bet it's about 10x better in a country with less rain!

Like the house by the school better but living by the beach sounds like a better lifestyle move.
Jealous would love to live in New Zealand

Beach, I have friends further down the coast at New Brighton and they love the beach lifestyle!

Thanks all for your replies, I knew mumsnet would help :) Drove it a couple of times today and its a pretty nice drive and it is a beautiful place. Crystal you're so right about people moaning about the traffic, they have traffic reports here saying there are queues on specific roads, when there are over 4 cars at the traffic lights Grin.
I had a phone call about an hour ago to say we'd got the house by the beach, so lifestyle choice it is Wine

Your love being by Waimairi beach, I go there loads. The beach cafe is also good and has a small play pen type play area. Board park is also a favourite with my girls. I have name changed but I think we met up when we first arrived in the botanic gardens back in March. Time has flown by kept meaning to text but got busy. I will look out for you at the beach. When do you move?

CrystalDeCanter · 20/12/2013 22:11

Congratulations Juniper. Will you be there during the summer holidays?
