Selling your house- do you think that being alone during viewings is unsafe?

Just that. Would you want another adult with you?

No, doesn't bother me at all.

Bowlersarm · 16/12/2013 15:31

It hasn't bothered me before.

Are you selling through an estate agent? They should of course, have all the details of anyone viewing your house.

LastOneDancing · 16/12/2013 15:34

Ive been fine doing viewings alone. Just made sure I had my mobile & text DH when they arrived/left.

Are you doing it through an agent? If you're uncomfortable I'd insist they do the viewings and earn a tiny scrap of their outrageous fees

Welshworrier · 16/12/2013 15:56

I found it easier to have accompanied viewings. The agents were much better at 'selling' the house. I was happy to go out or hide in the garden.

BackforGood · 16/12/2013 16:04

No, I don't think they are unsafe, but agree with others the Estate Agent (if you are using one) will often do a better job than yourself / the current owner.

shoom · 16/12/2013 17:13

I've been doing the viewings myself. A friend thought it may be unsafe (being a single female I think). I hadn't thought of it so was interested to hear others' views.

And yes, I'm selling through an Estate Agent.

I did viewings on my own or with the DC. Didn't think to worry about it tbh.

LIZS · 16/12/2013 17:16

We had over 20 viewings on our previous house and only one was a bit odd, fortunately my dm was staying at the time. It sold to people EA showed round though.

breatheslowly · 16/12/2013 17:52

I've always insisted on the estate agent doing the viewings in an empty house. I've found that you get better offers then (but I've only sold 2 houses).

Ragwort · 16/12/2013 17:53

Never even thought about it to be honest, and I was selling my first home long before mobile phones were invented Grin.

Lucyadams184 · 18/12/2013 11:36

I wouldn't like to be on my own. I'd be fine if an estate agent was there though.

karron · 18/12/2013 21:06

I did them myself, on my own, and never worried about it. The estate agent didn't do any viewings. I was on mat leave at the time.

BrownSauceSandwich · 18/12/2013 22:15

I wouldn't worry too much. As long as the estate agent gives me a list of who's coming, and I would ask each caller for their name rather than assume it was the person I expected.

WaitingForMe · 18/12/2013 22:23

I do viewings as a buyer with baby DS. Regularly meet random EAs and sellers.

But then I'm self-employed and have meetings everywhere from industrial estates to private homes. 95% of my clients are male. If I worried, I'd never work!

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 18/12/2013 22:31

Do you mean because of the Susy Lamplugh (sp?) case?

I'd say if your EA takes the booking, you're just letting them in and expecting them then you'd be fine. Wouldn't bother me, I'd be more embarrassed than anything else.

Sunnysummer · 19/12/2013 00:10

It's usually much more successful to have the EA do the viewings in any case, I tend to get out of the way and have a coffee or hang out in the park for a bit.

SteeleyeStan · 19/12/2013 00:34

The EAs must be particularly shit in our future hometown then. Grin After all the viewings we did, it would never have occured to me that anyone would consider EA viewings better or more successful. None of them seemed able to answer any questions or care very much, or give access to see the loft (or in one case even the garden), whereas we always felt we came away with much more information about the property after being shown around by a seller. So if you're leaving it all upto the EA, at least make sure they're not useless (and that they know how to open the doors!).

ILoveAFullFridge · 19/12/2013 00:37

I always insisted that EA should escort viewers, whether or not I was at home. I would not have felt safe alone (London!). But I'm far from convinced that the EAs were better sellers. Some of them were utter plonkers.
