Anyone have them , found out the stairs in our new home has got lovely wooden ones when we lifted the dirty old carpets and very tempted to keep them, they look to be mahogany and are solid .

Yes, but we did end up putting a runner on them to get rid of the sound of several herds of baby elephants slightly heavier footstep noise generated by DH and small child.

Ah thanks was a runner expensive?

Runner is a good idea. Our wooden stairs were very slippery - I slipped down them when pregnant so we carpeted them after that!

Oops - sorry 50shades, was dragged off to RL for a while there...No, not really, although, like everything it will depend on the carpet quality and the underlay quality (personally I'd spend more on the underlay than the carpet if it comes down to that). We didn't bother with stair rods though as they were back 'in fashion' at the time and whether original salvage or 'replica' were hideously expensive.

Ours looked something like this, but more green in tones which seemed to bring out the depth in the wood at the edges.
