What height should I hang pictures at?

I like to hang them so that their middle point is where my head is. DH thinks that this is funny (but doesn't have any better suggestions!).

So, are there a set of rules that use height of house occupant, height of ceiling etc?

I don't have a set of rules, as it depends so much on what you are hanging.
I'd see where looks right to you. Get one person to hold in place whilst the other stands back & looks to see what looks right.
Some of my pictures are in clusters, some centred on the wall, some on the visual centre, some in pairs or in a row above/below (hallway)
My big canvases are hung quite high (as the pictures are huge), others at eye level, the one above our bed is long and thin and is quite high but in the centre of the space between the picture rail & the bed head, eye level is generally too low in my house as most of the ceilings are 3m+, but in the lower rooms it's fine.
I'm not sure if that helps or is more confusing.
I'd say play around with it and see what works for your pictures & house.

Thanks wonkylegs, yes, I think I generally go for the visual centre. The ceilings in our house aren't high, so this is probably what looks best. I can be quite anal, so I'd like a 'rule' that I can follow!

I work in a gallery. The standard hanging height is 56 or 57 inches to centre (ie measure the back of the picture and halve it. 57 inches + half of picture height = height of top of picture). However in my house I hang things also depending on whether they're over a piece of furniture, how large they are etc. and even in the gallery we adjust things by eye sometimes. (when I've installed in Japan anad Korea we've hung things slightly lower too...)

56 or 57 inches from the floor

In general, I find most people hang their pictures too high. If in doubt, err on the side of lowness.
