Getting myself all in a tangle over this as work on my house wraps to a close so please share candidly. Did you?! Would you?! And what did you gift or would gift?

Well, am buying mine a v.nice bottle of whiskey as have discovered he likes whiskey, and will also add in additional cash for the crew to get a few rounds of drinks in. Maybe something like that if you want to? Or something like a collection of things to keep warm in the colder months (so those hand warmers from camping shops/decent wool hat/hip flask etc.,)

I don't think it's expected, but ours has been pretty exceptional (looks like things have come in under budget Xmas Shock as well as all the details attended to around the renovations so wanted to give something small to acknowledge that.)

We didn't but we wrote a lovely email that he has as a reference on his website.

I did keep them in biscuits and cake for 6 months.

It is customary actually to buy a bottle of whiskey or cognac.

In the old days, you would hang it from the rafters, or the highest part of your house, for a new build or extensive rebuilds/extensions.

I would get a really nice bottle of something and a card. Most likely he will share it with his team, as they go for a tipple afterwards (which is why wine wont do) Smile

Someone who has done an exceptional job (builder / PM) deserves something special.

Even a "thank you" letter / email is appreciated, plus a bottle of Hennesy or Rioja at least!

My last two commissions (I'm an architect) both produced very nice "thank you" letters - which was very nice indeed. The fee for the first one was £900. The fee for the other was £108,000!

The commission before those two was - at present - minus £450 (solicitor's fees) as the little shit didn't pay up and I'm taking her to court!

Daily biscuits, website reference with photos, pizza delivery on last day.

Bottle of champagne and a good reference for the building firm. We dithered over a gift for all the rest of the tradespeople but decided that as we had over 30 individuals on site, it would have been 6 cases of champagne for a bottle each so we didn't quite stretch to that!

myron · 04/12/2013 07:33

Bottle of champagne for the foreman that is - not one bottle
for 30+ people to share.

I wish I had a decent builder to want to give a thank you gift to! sobs uncontrollably into hands because of the state of her house

wonkylegs · 04/12/2013 14:50

I did some (not building) work for a major UK company once, at the final Project Board meeting the lad handed out engraved mementoes to (almost) everyone.

My director said "oh, you've forgotten to give Piglet his gift"

the lad had to rummage in his bag and pretend he'd forgotten to buy the right number

"That's all right" said his boss "just make sure you get it before the end of the day"

hahahahaha!

QuintessentialShadows · 04/12/2013 17:28

LOL! I was project managing our self build. I did not get a bottle of anything.

Did get a brand new house though. Wink With the PERFECT laundry room, just the way I wanted it. Shame to leave the house behind two years later....

Poor you PigletJohn! Shock

PigletJohn · 04/12/2013 17:36

I went out with the git at lunchtime and chose an item to my own taste, no questions asked Grin

Brilliant suggestions to be found! Like the hennesy idea and beers for lads. The latter will only work however if all on site for final day!

Off to mse to see if any offers going on posh whiskey Blush
