Range cooker or built in?

Hi

We are in the middle of ordering a new cooker. I had kind of settled on a Britannia range cooker but have now learnt they recently went into administration (though they were bought out pretty much immediately by Glen Dimplex).

Anyhow, I asked for views of the Delphi vs the Sigma and had people suggest built in is better. I like the aesthetic of a range cooker (esp as it'll sit in an old fireplace in a late Victorian house), and I'm not sure how I'd achieve that with built in appliances. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I think if you like the look and have the space, go for a range. I have been planning a kitchen for the house we are renovating and despite always having planned to have built-in, was seriously swayed by a sexy black range for a while. They do look lovely. But in the end, we did not have the space (would have had to sacrifice wide drawers) so went for built in.

I want a range because I want to have 2 ovens and a separate grill which is very expensive to do with built in, but I do like the height of built in ovens.

So how much do you cook? and which do you prefer to use? I would never choose an oven just because it 'goes', it's a piece of kit I use every day so substance wins out over style for me.

MothershipG you are quite right. I cook loads but manage perfectly well with 2 ovens (one with a grill) and four rings, so was unconvinced by ranges, until a gorgeous Falcon turned my head.

Can't have a range as dodgy back. Built in for me.
Look at ranges/agas with longing .......

I'm going for eye-level built in as well, I can't be doing with bending down to look under a grill anymore, plus I have glasses so I steam up every time I have to bend down to look in an oven.

We inherited a large rangemaster cooker with our house when we bought it. Two full size ovens, separate grill, large hob space. However, although I cook loads the left hand oven tended to only get used at Christmas. In the end, when we redid the kitchen, we went for a built in large singe oven, with built in combination oven/microwave above. This works really well, don't miss the range at all, and having the oven at eye level is fantastic.
