what is wrong with our boiler?

our gas combi boiler works fine for hot water, but more often than not we can't get the heat to come on. it doesn't matter whether we have it on timer or permanently on, more often than not it just doesn't fire up. then out of the blue,it will. I don't think it is the timeclock (because permanently on doesn't work either), or the pump (because sometimes it works).

help, I am freezing :(

what sort of wall thermostat have you got?

Betty5313 · 04/12/2013 12:07

a very old dial type, which isn't working at all.

if your room thermostat doesn't work, it is no surprise that your heating doesn't work, or, at best, will deliver very poor economy and/or comfort.

It might be the thermostat itself that is faulty (although the old dial versions are extremely simple devices) or it might be a wiring fault.

New thermostats can be extremely cheap, though a programmable one such as the Honeywell CM907 do a lot more

thanks pigletjohn. the thermostat has been taken out so now it is just turn boiler on when it is cold, turn it off when it is too hot. we would like a 7 day programmer, waiting to get one installed.

with luck it will be an electrical or controls problem. You no longer need a timer/programmer when you have a programmable thermostat.
