Isle of Wight
a) yes
b) depends on how you plan to make a living
c) no
d) I live across the solent and rarely go there

it really, really comes down to where you'll be living, what you do, how old kids are
the Island is perfect for some friends and nightmare for others

princesscupcakemummyb · 30/11/2013 22:03

The ferry costs about £80 return to get over to mainland to Southampton, that would be one hell of an expensive trip if you wanted to get somewhere like Ikea...

Talkinpeace · 01/12/2013 12:50

catch the red jet for £12 - give the red funnel staff a heart attack

OP
The Island is an interesting place.
Many people live there and work on the mainland.
The schools are going through interesting times but hopefully will be sorted by the time yours hit secondary
work is highly seasonal and the council is spectacularly corrupt
BUT
property is dirt cheap and the scenery is beautiful

vj32 · 01/12/2013 18:18

I wouldn't live there. Most people have to come back to the mainland for work, roads and facilities are poor or seasonal only. Its very pretty except every time I have been there its raining. (I fully accept it isn't raining ALL the time - just that scenery that is stunning in the sun can equally look bleak and miserable in the rain!) And you really don't want to be there when the festival is on.

The steam train is great, but not really reason to live somewhere.

Why are you thinking about the IoW? Why not Hampshire or elsewhere on the south coast?

princesscupcakemummyb · 01/12/2013 18:25

hi vj32 it was just one of the places we looked at im looking at other places like coasts ideally want some where smaller then london or to live by the sea i have no idea what areas are nice or not so nice so getting ppls comments are very welcome and helpful :)

don't tell anyone i said so, but
Corfe Mullen / west Moors / Ferndown
or
the Witterings
or Titchfield
or Lyme (watching the kids burying each other in the beach after school - in uniform - is one of my funniest memories)

ladygoingGaga · 01/12/2013 19:56

I lived on the island until I was 20, it is generally a safe place to live, quaint and beautiful.

Cost of travel and limited opportunities for your children would be a huge factor that would mean I wouldn't want to live there.

It is packed In the summer and dead in the winter, cowes for instance is great for a few weeks in the summer, but go there in the winter it is depressingly bleak.

I would say it was a perfect retirement location, and second living in Hampshire across the solent

valiumredhead · 02/12/2013 14:59

Yes I lived there as a teen, no way would I bring children up there as there are tons of drugs and lots of bored kids, and I speak as someone who lived in London for nearly 20 years and there's far more drugs on the island!

There was a thread on here about the dark side of the island which made interesting reading, worth doing a search for some more info Smile
