Metro tiles - stylish alternatives?

So, I am getting a new kitchen. I do like metro tiles BUT, I fear they will date rapidly and I'd like something slightly more timeless.

What suggestions does anyone have? Simply painted walls? I'd prefer tiles or something easy to clean?

There are timeless IMO, given that they have been around for at least 100 years and are still popular.

Has anyone used non-white metro tiles? Or used white but coloured tiles in a pattern within them predominant white wall?

I think they are timeless too. I have them in cream with cream units boring but simple and elegant looking.

I feckin love my red metro tiles.

I went for mega bland kitchen units that won't date. If the tiles (or their colour) date they are easy enough to replace.
