Stained/waxed oak doors- product recommendations?

I have just had oak/veneer doors fitted in my house. The joiner has put the fear of god into us about not touching them with fingers until they are protected. I am after a Matt colourless protection- any recommendations please? I have read good things about Osmo rub on stain. But any other pointers would be welcome.

we just used a matt varnish on our oak doors - we gave each door 2 coats. It didn't change the colour at all on them and left them looking natural. On the one door we left for a month or so before varnishing it we do notice a small area which is darker where people have not used the handles to open/close the door - its obviously dirt/sweat from hands which has caused the area to darken as the rest of the door is absolutely fine. rub each coat down lightly before putting the next coat of varnish on.

Any stain you use will change the colour of the doors. if you use an oil or a wax you will need to reapply it every so often as they aren't permanent finishes.

if it is veneered, the instructions probably warn against using an oil or wax. Check the manufacturer's or retailer's website.

A satin varnish can look quite good.

If you use a tinted stain, the colour will be patchy depending on how much came off your brush. You can get better colour evenness by using a wood dye such as colron, followed by a colourless varnish. I have been using Diamond recently.

We have decided on Dulux Satin trade varnish - the man at the decorator centre was really helpful. Thanks everyone.

Saw your recommendation just now Piglet John, thanks for your good advice. That's what we went with.

Thanks for the advice everyone-we went with Piglet Johns suggestion and the satin varnish looks spot on.
