Do I need to buy a expensive duvan base?

I'm going to make my headboard, and we've a very expensive comfy mattress.

I'd like a duvan with drawers for storage, and I'd like it in a plain cream/white colour but apart from that I don't care too much about it. But will a cheap one ruin the mattress?
Can I buy them on their own? I've looked I can't see any without mattresses :/

Thank you!

as long as there's adequate ventilation a cheap one will be fine - but if there's not you mattress may get mouldy ! so worth looking around ! why not buy a slatted bed base and have storage under with baskets or trundle drawers ?!

ikea do them on their own ! or for a cheap and cheerful slatted bed try ARGOS ?! and chop the headboard off to fix your own one !
