breakfast bar - yay or nay?

We're renovating a house at the moment but have run out of money to be able to extend the living room, so we're going to be stuck with a really tiny living room - basically just space for a corner sofa and tv. Nice kitchen diner room next door plus separate small playroom.

Would you have a breakfast bar or do you think people would just sit at the dining room table? Our children are 2 and 5 so too small to safely sit on bar stools at the moment.

thx for any thoughts!

Sorry do you mean move the wall, or knock it down totally?

For what its worth, I don't know anyone that actually uses a breakfast bar.

myalias · 13/11/2013 13:03

Nay we got rid of ours because we didn't use it

BobaFetaCheese · 13/11/2013 13:03

Nay.
Our breakfast bar (was there when we bought and DH wanted to keep it as storage when we renovated kitchen) is home to the vacuum cleaner and has been since we put it in....although it's sometimes used as a den by DS1!

Like Pootles, I've never known anyone to use a breakfast bar, don't like sitting on stools in coffee shops so wouldn't do it at home.

BuzzardBird · 13/11/2013 13:05

Nay. Breakfast bar=clutter table.

DwellsUndertheSink · 13/11/2013 13:05

we used ours when kids were small, but now its just another space for collecting junk.

When we remodel, its coming out.

Breakfast bars are no good for DC, and they will wreck the posture of any adult using them. I hate them!

Nay nay and nay again. I can't think they look dated and naff. Eating? Sit down on a blooming chair then.

showtunesgirl · 13/11/2013 13:10

I hate them with an all abiding passion. Sad I know.

oh good, I'm very happy you have all said the same thing! Perfect, no to the breakfast bar it is...

I have one on my island. It is full of junk, never again.

I don't much like sitting at ours, but, to be fair, the rest of the family do. DD2 likes to sit there doing her homework whilst I cook dinner. And any visiting kids love making themselves go up and down on the bar stools. That said, our "breakfast bar" is just a overhanging bit of worktop on our "island" with space for two. It can be also be handy when someone wants to chat to you or have a coffee when I am doing something in the kitchen. If space allows, I would have a similar arrangement in our next house - assuming we ever get to actually move somewhere.

redundant · 13/11/2013 14:29

it would be just like that cavell - an overhang on the end of a U shaped kitchen - just enough space for two stools. Now I am wavering again!

We have one and it is used daily by me and DD for breakfast, and by me for lunch. Dinner is in the dining room. I love it.
