Has anyone painted a bedroom black?

If so how did it look?

Dd1 wants a black bedroom and I'm looking for inspiration. Do we just do the one wall or all of them? (not the ceiling though)

I think I prefer cream to white for woodwork etc as it will be slightly warmer looking

Have a look on pinterest- some amazing rooms on there. Woodwork black too, btw! (Well... F&B Railings or Downpipie Wink)

Yep, when I was a teenager. It was cool for a few years, but don't underestimate how it saps the light out of the room. I had a sunny, south-west facing bedroom, and it was in permanent gloom. I would need floodlights and a head torch to find a missing sock in the middle of the afternoon. But if your daughter is a teenager, that'll be her natural anyway. And if what she wants is a black bedroom, I really don't think one wall is going to serve the purpose... It's all or nothing.

What I will advise, my wise mother having done the same to me, is that part of the agreement is that SHE will repaint it, properly, so not a trace of the black shows through, when either:
A) she gets tired of it.
B) she leaves home.
C) you need to sell the house.
It was a shit of a job... About five full coats of good quality white paint before it stopped looking streaky grey. That's the price of privilege.

My bedroom is black.

Yes it seeps out all light.

Yes it is constantly dark (I've now got one white wall to counteract this)

Yes the room seems a lot smaller

Yes you will need a lot of lighting to make it habitable (I have 7 lamps)

Yes it looks lovely

I would be tempted to paper it with backing paper or something paintable first then paint black, then at least you can remove paper rathe than having to paint over it.

I had a red bedroom with black wrought iron furniture.. I totally underestimated how dark and gloomy it was...

It's now 50 shades of beige and cream and it's so much happier...

My lovely dad did this for me when I was a grungy teenager. I loved it. Black walls, black carpet and a deep purple ceiling. He papered the walls before painting to save himself lots of effort when it came time to repaint (which was when I went to University and mum couldn't cope with it anymore), I think the ceiling took him a few coats to cover. It probably did steal the light from the room but seeing as how I never opened the curtains anyway I didn't care Smile

Thanks everyone. She's only 9 bless her but she's wanted it for so long. I talked her out of it but she's now seen the Dyson ad and said well she's got a black wall and it looks great!

I will look on Pinterest for some ideas - thanks
