Want to move but partner doesn't

My partner, myself and our 7 month old are currently living in Croydon in a 1 bed flat. I do not like the area (dirty, too much crime, not many good schools...) and would like to move.

I have seen a place in a nice part of Beckenham which is surrounded by nice parks, good schools, plenty of shops. On top of that, the flat is a spacious 2 bedroom/2 bathroom with balcony and garden area at the back. It's also £100+ cheaper than what we pay in Croydon.

My partner does not want to move to Beckenham, mainly because he has lived in Croydon all his life, has all his friends here and works here (he works night shifts). I am a SAHM but will be back at university next September. I have checked the transport links - there are teams, trains and buses that are 22 minutes away from Croydon. Still, he thinks this is too much of a hassle (?!).

What would you do in this situation? I do not want us to stay in Croydon and beckenham is such a nicer area. Am I being unreasonable here?

Doesn't sound very unreasonable to me... Cheaper AND better! Confused

I think your most persuasive arguments (given that he obviously lurves) Croydon, are the price (I guess things will be be more expensive with you at uni), and the space (you can't stay in a one-bed forever, right?)

His most persuasive argument is being close to his job, and you will have to offset any saving on rent against increased travel costs. Being so close to his friends... Nah, I'm not impressed.

Not clear which part of Croydon you live in. Could you compromise by moving to the south of the borough e.g. South Croydon, Selsdon, Purley and Sanderstead? Perhaps put a question on the Mumsnet Local page for Croydon (local.mumsnet.com/croydon) and see if anyone has any views. There are definitely very good schools in the are and good transport links.

Hopefully this link works!

Maybe make a pros and cons chart. Figure in size, bath, garden, shops, parks, commute, rent, crime, safety, ambiance, his friends. I'm with you on this, trying to help!
