Toilet overflow dripping constantly.

That's it. The pipe is dripping outside. Clearly the cistern is overfilling but not are how to adjust it. It is a ballcock. Any idea?

I think you bend the ball cock down on the wire rod, so the lever for the valve goes up earlier and stops the flow at a lower level

Almost certainly the washer and cone are worn out and need changing. New valves are so cheap that it will be easier to just fit a new one

Can you lift off the cistern lid easily?

Is the valve brass or plastic?

How long is the arm?

Does the water pipe enter the cistern through the side ir the bottom?

Is the old one noisy when filling?

Have you got a set of adjustable spanners?

...do you know where the stop cock is?

Thanks both. It is plastic ball cock. The water enters apt the bottom of the cistern. I have spanners and yes know how to turn the water off.

What next? If it is a tricky job though I may need a plumber?

you unscrew the float from the old one.

If the valve filled up at mains pressure (there is no tank in the loft and/or when you put your thumb over the basin tap, you can't stop the water squirting out) then one of these would be much quieter.

Both of these are bottom-entry. An equivalent side-entry valve is also available.
