Has anyone made their own chalk paint?

I'm about to start a furniture painting project (my first!) consisting of 2 triple wardrobes, a very wide unit with drawers, a cheval mirror and two bedside cabinets (thought I'd start off small!). Am literally about to check out of the Annie Sloan online shop with my old ochre, clear and dark wax but have cold feet (and a small wallet). I read that someone made their own using 2/3 paint and 1/3 grout! Could this work? Has anyone done this effectively. Also, could I use any wax over the top - does it have to be Annie Sloan?

Update: After some Googling, have ordered calcium carbonate powder off Amazon and am going to make my own chalk paint. Have also ordered clear and a darker wax (non Annie Sloan!). Watch this space! Shock

Home made chalk paint mixed and I am currently testing on a picture frame (before I start my big project).

I've used calcium
Carbonate mixed with farrow and ball and with Fired Earth paint. Great results.

Great idea! What are the proportions of calc carb to paint please?

Two table spoons of calcium carb to four table spoons of paint (could be cups if you use larger amounts).

Mix the calcium carb with a little hot water before adding the paint and it will be smooth rather than grainy.

Am using it with Laura Ashley paint - mainly because I have a tin! :)

Picture frame turned out great so I am starting on the bedside cabinets. :)

Bedside cabinet one complete! Looks good. I finished with Briwax clear and Briwax Antique Pine - achieved exactly the colour and look I was aiming for. Starting on the other bedside cabinet later. The worst thing about this project is going to be unscrewing all the handles and cleaning them with Brasso!
