Is this really what decorators cost now?

Just had an estimate to re-wallpaper my hall, stairwell and landing. I din't have a tiny house (4 beds) but hardly Downton Abbey. Anyway, estimate is £1200, labour only to paint and apply 15 rolls is paper.

Doesn't include stripping old paper off, that would be extra.

I'm in the north of England. Mabye I'm just being naive but was quite taken aback!

Yes. We had our hall done last year. It was a three bed house, 60's house so not incredibly high ceilings (tho one bit of double height). It was £1k (after negotiation). Similarly, paper and paint. Tho did also include woodwork (halls always have loads of woodwork because of all the doorways). Is woodwork included?

(I'm in Scotland)

similar quotes here (London) for front room, hallway and woodwork.

cottoncandy · 14/10/2013 20:22

yes, if it includes painting bannisters, doorframes etc I think that's quite reasonable, sorry... 15 rolls is quite a lot of paper and halls tend to be quite awkward

I'm in the north and got quoted £850 to sand woodwork, gloss, paint walls and ceiling for hall stairs and landing. Only a 3 bed house though.

PoppyWearer · 14/10/2013 20:25

Yes, sounds about the same as we paid a few years back (south-east).

Misty9 · 14/10/2013 20:29

We just paid £1k to have ours done, just paint though as he refused to wallpaper! Lots of woodwork with doors and bannister etc. it's a three bed semi btw.

HaveToWearHeels · 14/10/2013 20:47

Ours is £120 per day in the south east.

PastaBeeandCheese · 14/10/2013 21:15

Did he say how long it would take so you could work out a day rate?

HaveToWearHeels · 15/10/2013 09:25

We know he is £120 per day as he does a lot of work for us, he just comes rounds and gives you a quote with materials, his quote details the number of 8 hour days.

He is currently doing, 2 walls in the (largish) kitchen/breakfast (lots of fiddly bits around wall units windows, doors etc), cloakroom (typical size), 4 walls in lounge (23' x 14'), gloss front door.
He is just painting walls no glossing or ceiling, 5 days work £600, plus a bit extra for sundries, we are providing paint.
If it takes him less or more (unforseen problems) then we pay accordingly, he has however never charged us more although he reserves the right to on his quote.
