Tips for doing an extension

We're about to exchange on a house that is termed a 'project' and will need an extension. We will be very hands on throughout and whilst have done lots of work on properties before this is the biggest challenge yet. So, any tips you wished you'd heard before you started?

We're coming to the end of doing our extension and one thing I found handy was that I'd opened a separate bank account for the extension costs. This way it's easier to keep track of how much you've spent.

Get a contract not estimate.

Get planning permission or check if you need it or will get it if applied for. If you're unsure, speak to local planning department or look at www.planningportal.gov.uk Don't rely on estate agent advice or an unqualified person whom claims to know about planning.
