What colour window frames on a stone house?

Our very old (but new to us) house is having the windows restored & we're having an extension.
DH has just said 'of course we're not having white'.
I'm now in a colour panic. its taken me 3 months to chose the kitchen cupboard colours
Not sage green, but I'm open to other suggestions..

Farrow and Ball lime white

GrendelsMum · 07/10/2013 21:11

I saw some lovely oatmeal colourd windows on a stone house.

steppemum · 07/10/2013 21:43

it depends where you are, and what type of stone.

Go out for a walk and spot all the colours on neighbouring buildings and see what you like

mineofuselessinformation · 07/10/2013 21:55

Have you looked at other houses near you? Take your lead from them.

HormonalHousewife · 07/10/2013 21:55

whats your local stone like ?

WhatWillSantaBring · 07/10/2013 22:08

Doesn't anyone worry that coloured windows will be the avocado bathroom suites/ stained brown windows of the future? We are having same debate for our 80's Cotswold stone house!

GrendelsMum · 07/10/2013 22:12

Oh, I'm sure they will be, but the thing is that our taste will be fixed in 2013 and so we'll continue to like them!

EastwickWitch · 08/10/2013 05:58

Thanks all.
The other stone houses have F&B greenygrey which I think has been overdone round here or off white.
I think the new windows for the extension will be pre painted white (with some sort of paint guarantee) & I'm wondering if it'll look odd having the main house frames coloured.

I'm loving Grendelsmums comment. I expect we'll look back and say 'do you remember when we had stone floors in the bathroom & everyone used paints from only 2 companies?'

Personally, I'd go for a proper chalk white, but I do think your husband ought to have more of a say than me, so how do you feel about primrose yellow?

The difference between coloured window frames and avocado bathroom suites is that we generally repaint the window frames every few years, as part of routine maintenance, giving us regular opportunities to change our minds!

I'd presumed white, he's presumed the ubiquitous green grey.
We'll find a compromise, a white that says its a colour..
Thanks for the comments.

if the stone is 'Cotswold' colour then the F&B no.22 blue does go well - but if that's been done to death by the neighbours already then maybe go for the deepest shade of the stone - and have a paint made in that colour ....
... if it's more London grey stone than bright white works well as does eggshell black !
... if you want to create a statement on any stone colour then go for a bright colour rather than a muted one :-)

EastwickWitch · 08/10/2013 09:01

It's a greenish grey, if you're feeling inspired oneplan..

I love that combination, I wonder what colour it is?

EastwickWitch, I think it (the window frame i.e) looks like 6028 from the Nordan RAL chart.

kitsmummy · 08/10/2013 11:22

East wick, can you put a picture of the stone on your profile? A Cotswold type stone house around here has a lovely greige type colour which looks great. Prob F&B but not sure which one.

Our garage doors are hardwick white and look lovely - it's not quite as green as the predictable F&B choices.

kitsmummy · 08/10/2013 11:24

I like macskater's grey too

EastwickWitch · 08/10/2013 16:32

I've tried to upload a photo without success. The Stone is greyer than London stone, more like Portland stone but with a slight green tinge.
I don't think we can have Nordan window frames as the house is listed & the PP is very specific.

EastwickWitch · 08/10/2013 16:33

Actually, it's up now.

Eastwick, I know Nordan is not for everyone - just using it to show the colours. Good luck with your shopping, I imagine your house must be lovely

EastwickWitch · 09/10/2013 11:20

I think the Norden are lovely but the Heritage have actually specified which company we have to use [shock}.
The website is great for ideas though, so thank you.

I've been trying to get to see your pic - but it's not allowing me ! Have you chosen a colour yet ? :-)
