What's Galashiels like?

Next year we'll be moving to Edinburgh with our two DS (3 and 6 mo) from London. I'm originally from there and I have family there. We plan to rent centrally for a bit to allow us to really research where we want to be then buy. Our budget is up to £300k. DH (a Londoner) would be working in central Edinburgh, I'm currently a SAHM.
Looking at areas (we would also like a garden) initially we were thinking Portobello, Cramond, North Berwick (too ££?). But with the borders railway coming in we've started to think that somewhere like Stow or Gala would make sense. What are the realities of living there? I know the snow can be full on and the road isn't the best.
Thanks.

I used to live nearby as a child, and didn't like it, however I'm sure the railway will make a difference and probably it has changed a lot too. However, personally I'd love to live nearer Edinburgh, particularly as a sahm. I'm afraid I found quite strong anti-English sentiment there, but like I say this was some years ago so may have changed.

Gala isn't great but have you looked at Peebles & Innerleithen? Much nicer & an easier/quicker drive into town. Snow is rarely a problem.

Depending on your budget if you're still thinking about living closer in I would also recommend Balerno.

We recently moved in the opposite direction and I'm v jealous! Smile

Are you priced out of Peebles?

I'd also look at Balerno and Currie. Good schools etc.

Thanks for all the feedback!
Yes I think Peebles will be too expensive.
I think I'll also look at Dunbar...
