Have you ever let your house to NATO/military personnel?

We've got a possible option to rent out our house to NATO on a 2/3 year contract (very reliable rent obv.) but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this - if yes, what I'm really interested in is what their exact requirements are. The housing officer couldn't give me any information until they've been around to take photographs and that won't be for another few months. If there's no chance of them taking the house I don't want to spend the next few months thinking it's an option!

I've not rented to military personnel but I have rented as military personnel. So although I'm obv v biased I wouldn't hesitate. Im not eure why you have doubts to be honest.

You have the same risks as renting to anyone, but no more (unless you have a negative image of the military in which case, have a ) - AND you have a really good recourse if there are any problems, as military personnel only ever have a licence to occupy (not a lease- your legal tenant will be the MOD).

Oh god no, I think they'll be BRILLIANT tenants - I'm more worried they'll look at our house and think it's "not good enough" iyswim!

Oh, I see! Sorry!! Well, you can but try. Some of the ssfa (ie private sector housing used for military families) is really ropey so I don't think it has to be as high a standard as, say, a bank's corporate rental for newly employed executives.

You've a very good point there - it's not of course banking execs in Chelsea. I will find out in a few months anyway and tbh with the guaranteed rental I'm happy to put money in to it if they say "fix this and we'll take it"!

I hope my house isn't ropey , but you know what I mean - when you live there you tend to overlook things and just learn to live with them.

Is your house for rent now? Dont understand why you are waiting 2 months for the accomodation officer to view and then another how many months before the tenant moves in?

Do you know what rank or nationality the proposed tenant is? It may give you an idea of their expectations.

hi sunny We're living in it right now and the accommodation officer won't come around until a minimum of 4 weeks until the house will be available.

No idea about rank (presumably not good enough for a 5* general ), but nationality likely to be US or Norwegian. The Brits are scaling down their operations and so are not taking on any more houses. There are a lot of lower ranks here and a lot of singles as well as families, we'd be quite happy to let to 2/3 single men - yes, they'll party - but their bills will be covered and the military would kick their arse if they were too far out of line!
