What colour hallway paint?

We're having black and white checked hallway tiles, wooden stairs with a dark grey carpet runner but not sure what paint colour to have. It's not a huge hallway so I want something light but what's best... white, cream, light grey or something else?

if you have any particular suggestions of colours from a paint brand (dulux, f+b, fired earth etc) please let me know!

I wouldn't do grey or white.. Sounds like there's enough monochrome going on, and it could feel a bit dismal. A cream or ivory would take the edge off and look sharp with the grey, or if you wanted something more edgy, a grubby yellow (eg F&B ciara yellow, or FE Indian yellow) would still be bright.

Grass green if you are brave - looks amazing with black and white tiles. Add in white skirtibg boards and bannisters etc to keep it light.

I'm not sure if the green will be a bit dark, it's not a massive hallway.

Dulux Egyptian Cotton - creamy grey, very lovely, but not too grey that it will make your hall area look like a typical grey british summer day!

Have b&w checked floor in our hall, beige golden stair carpet. Choose F&B Dayroom Yellow and it's lovely with sharp white woodwork. Now the hall always looks sunny. Would def recommend (we may well do the same scheme in next house).

quick question: do the fired earth paints need as many coats as f+b?
