Where can I buy beautiful and unusual fabric?

We need to have a roman blind made for the dining room and want something statementy. Don't want to spend a fortune but want something that doesn't look too DIY-chainy IYKWIM. I like more traditional designs rather than ultra modern.

Have looked at sanderson and harlequin but struggling to find other brands with good choice where I can order samples online.

Have ordered samples of squirrel and dove fabric and also like this fabric and quite like this one but awaiting samples. None of them seem quite perfect though.

Have you looked at Designers Guild and Osborne and Little?

Reastie · 22/09/2013 14:43

Haven't tried designers guild but looked on O&L website and couldn't see anything, but then I found the website confusingly laid out Confused

Have a look at riona Treacy design online, she is first and foremost a textile designer and may be able to make something lovely up for you.

if there is an art college near you - well worth a visit - as you may be able to buy totally unique pieces there ! :-)

Reastie · 22/09/2013 16:47

Looked up Riona Treacy but seems to be just clothes not fabric Hmm

That Maccullouch site it wonderful about - have found a beautiful embroidery fabric but can't see how to get a sample of it to see if the colour goes - might email them

One I have Brighton art college an hour from me. Tried looking on their website about buying stuff from them but couldn't see anything. Fab idea though.

If anyone has any other suggestions they are gratefully received to expand the choice Thanks

John Lewis actually has a lovely selection. Or if you're anywhere near London, Walthamstow market or Goldhawk Road are brilliant.

Helliecopter · 22/09/2013 19:53

Can you get to Liberty on Regent St? Amazing selection.

50shadesofmeh · 22/09/2013 20:46

Liberty sounds like what you are looking for

Reastie · 22/09/2013 20:51

I looked on liberty online but nothing caught my eye (although assuming they have more in store). I could get there but would need to take a sample home to check in situ and don't have the chance for 2 trips...

mummy yup, checked JL.

Tangletree is quite good to look at a range of fabrics from different design houses but their range of collections isn't exhaustive. It will give you a good idea of brands though.

BrownSauceSandwich · 22/09/2013 21:05

I find liberty great for dress weight fabrics, but not so much for furnishing fabrics. John lewis is really good for furnishing fabrics, but limited selection online... You really need to go in.

From the designs you showed, I'm thinking of William morris or voysey designs. William morris prints/weaves now produced by sanderson.

I wouldn't buy osborne and little on principle. But that's another story!

Reastie · 22/09/2013 21:08

I like WIlliam Morris brown but DH doesn't as they it reminds him of my parents' house (they have alot of WM).

Will look into voysey and tangletree.

DH (who sells this stuff for a living) says to try colefax and fowler

BrownSauceSandwich · 22/09/2013 21:18

Have a look at these... They don't have prices on the site, which is a bit scary, but a few meters for a statement blind couldn't hurt, right? Wink

Reastie · 22/09/2013 21:22

Ohhh thanks ruby . I've fallen in love with this one although not 100% it will match our room, and it's £150 per metre

Reastie · 22/09/2013 21:22

x posted brown I like those but I know DH will say too Morris-y (will ask him tomorrow though)

Reastie · 23/09/2013 08:28

and lovely helpful staff

Reastie · 23/09/2013 14:55

Thanks again talkin that really isn't near me at all afraid.

Will check out andrew martin.

Went to JL this morning and ordered 6 samples of beautiful fabrics and hoping there'll be something there. One was voyage, one Morris (not too obviously morris though so may keep dh happy), one J Baker (or something like that) and one truly beautiful one that I forget the brand of but was eye wateringly expensive and one of those 'by appointment to the queen' brands.
