Can I share my totally exciting downstairs loo decorating ideas?

Just so that you all give me a nudge to actually do it?

It's a small under the stairs loo, so it should be cheap. There's a peg rail and a shelf at sort of picture-rail height, which makes a dividing line. I have some sage green paint left over from the livingroom, so I want to paint the lower walls in that.

Above the line, I want to wallpaper with photocopied sheets of newspaper (DP has the Liverpool Echo from the day John Lennon died, which I want to preserve, as it's worth a few bob to loonies on the internet), which I'll paint over with tea to age it, then maybe clear yacht varnish?

For the floor, I want to tile it in pennies. Has anyone tried this? What grout would you use? Yacht varnish on top?

What does that sound like?

Ooh love the flooring idea! Woud never have thought of that!

bsc · 18/09/2013 20:46

It sounds like ... something off pinterest! Grin

Do what you want to- it's your home!

You can get away with a lot in a v small room I think.

insancerre · 18/09/2013 20:48

I would love a floor like that, saw it on tv nce and it looked fantastic
I quite like the sound of your loo actually
We are doing ours at the moment
it's DH's design- the punk toilet
we have a union jack loo seat and a sex pistols framed poster
a heart made of barbed wire arounf the mirror and a wire light fitting with some barbed wire wrapped round it
we have about 60 photocopied 7 inch single sleeves that we are going to decorate the walls with which are wood panelled but painted a very dark grey
i have my eye on some vinyl flooring which is white with paint splatters on
i was also thinking of making a canvas with old gig tickets and photos

Would it be easier to stick the pennies onto cork tiles and then lay them. You could still grout between the pennies so you don't see any cork.

LibraryBook · 18/09/2013 21:03

It sounds vile. Grin And unhygienic. Grin But also wonderful in a bonkers way.

BOF · 18/09/2013 21:09

Bonkers is good Grin

Insancerre, that sounds cool as fuck.

As coins don't tessellate you will have some biggish gaps where four coins link together at the edges, so you will need to check (on the bag) when buying your grout, what width gap you can in fill up to, without the grout cracking.

I've seen this 'glued coins to floor' in a salvage yard store and it looked pretty effective, and they didn't grout the coins either!

BOF · 18/09/2013 21:12

Knittedslippersx3, there's a time-saving way to do it which looks doable.

You sort of offset the coins to keep the gaps small. I hope it works. Or I will end up with wee-soaked money all over the floor.

Mmm wee soaked money!! Love the general ideas though. I think the loo is a room you can get creative with as it's so small!

I'm off to Pinterest for some ideas for mine!!

mrspink27 · 18/09/2013 22:40

loads on pinterest with penny flooring

CookieDoughKid · 18/09/2013 23:22

Love your ideas. If it was me, I'd really clean up the copper tiles so they bling out shining on the floor! I wouldn't go with sage. Too much of a colour clash. A good tie' in' colour would be indigo or a kind of rock star purple...that would tie in together with the ink in newspaper. Its a small loo so you can get away with it!

knittedslippersx3 · 19/09/2013 10:04

BOF - I just watched the YouTube clip. I love it! You have to do it, I'm seriously thinking of doing my downstairs loo floor as well. It looks really good when it's finished.

Ginformation · 19/09/2013 10:32

Oh, I am totally nicking the penny floor idea! It looks well cool.

My downstairs bog is very dark aubergine walls and floor with old maps on the wall (ebay finds, of local area in the year the house was built). The little tiled splash back above the sink is mother of pearl mosaic.

BOF · 19/09/2013 10:46

What a brilliant idea with the maps, I love it.
