Ikea Expedit

I was in ikea today staring at the expedit units for AGES! I bought the 5x5, paid for it then changed my mind and swopped it for the 4x4 unit. Am now slithering if I have done the right thing. The playroom is about 2.7m wide and although the extra storage would be handy it would then take a fair chunk of that wall.

Sorry for being so long winded but does the 5x5 unit look massive? It's so hard to tell in the shop! The playroom is 2.7m wide by 4.5 long. Any one have the 5x5 and wish they had gone smaller or vice versa?

We for the 5 by 5 then liked it so much we added a 1 by 5 next to it, to five us 5 by 6

We have the 4x4 one for our toy storage and its perfect. We got some colourful boxes from Argos (3 for £10) that fit in it beautifully. The 4x4 one still has 16 spaces in it so we have just divided up dds toys into that number of boxes. (Box for wooden blocks, box of fancy dress, play dough stuff, cars, art stuff, puzzles, etc),

Dd still can't reach the top shelf that well so that's where the paint, glitter and messy stuff is kept.

Think about how many toys your dc actually have (and still play with) and if it's more than 16 squares worth of stuff then get the bigger one, but honestly dd has loads of toys and I'm happy with my 4x4 one.

I'm buying a 4 x 4 and a 2 x 4 at the weekend - have measured the room and chalked it all out - desperately hoping it'll fit too. The good thing about these is (like drownedgirl) you can add to it (but not take away so best to start small and work your way up...or out.

happy is it good as a bookshelf do you think??? That's primarily what I want it for but plan on having a few doors and drawers too

theonly I am sorry for hijacking your thread but I came on to ask about Expedit having gone goggle-eyed on the ikea website from trying to figure it all out!

Theonlyoneiknow · 12/09/2013 23:15

Thanks! The 5x5 wouldn't leave, much space at either side and I couldn't really reach the top to put bigger toys on it easily. Although I think I could do with the extra 5 cubes! Do you have a link to the Argos cubes? I didn't really like the colours Ikea had for their canvas boxes!

the only here is a link, not sure if it will work, but go to the Argos website and search canvas storage boxes and some will come up with similar products at the bottom. We have a mixture of the blue boxes, green boxes and empty squares with her dolls house, books, tea set and clock on display to make it look more arty! But I've just seen that they now have amazing animal face canvas boxes available so this thread means my design will probably be changing!

duffle we do have one cube reserved for books, so it will fit loads of books but the squares are quite big compared to the size of your average paperback, so there would be wasted space above all your books

I have a 5x5 with TV bit in the livingroom and am really happy with it.

The DSs have a 5x5 in their bedroom and it's not too big for the room at all.

Ikea do a new type of canvasy box for £2.50 each. Here. They fit expedit perfectly (as you'd expect) and they're pretty sturdy. We've got 4 of them in the unit we put in under DDs bed. (Kura bed, her room looks like a page from the catalogue!) They're full of train tracks, plastic food, tea sets, dressing up clothes etc. 2 of them are full of heavy bits, but they still hold their shape when lugged about. I just wish you could buy lids for them too.

As for the size of it, I would probably go for the bigger one as they're just so damn useful. Fab size for books, boxes, loose toys. However, try to take into account how deep it is when marking out how much room it takes up. I always seem to under estimate it, then get a bit of a shock that it's a fair bit more imposing than I intended. Blush
