Flooring for recessed platform bed?

We're having building work done, ds is getting a new room which will have a high bed on a recessed area that's been newly built into loft space. The area is quite large, would fit a double bed easily (what we had planned originally) but for the moment we will reuse his single mattress and get a low frame. So there will be plenty playing space.

The normal height room will have carpet...would you carpet the recess too? Would that be odd? I can't really think of an alternative - laminate or wood would look odder and be slippier I think, what else is there? Rubber? Help and advice gratefully received! Thanks.

The only issue with carpet is how you would Hoover it - at least with a hard floor you could sweep.

Ah Blush that will be ok as we have a roomba and a light cordless dyson thingy... Hoover obsessed. Thank you though!
