What plans do you have to renovate? How much do you have to spend?

I have a small budget of £14k to get the work done by various trades.

I have to spread it over the following:

Bedroom 1 - 4.09m x 3.07m – wardrobes probably oak furniture village, chest of drawers, redecoration including wallpaper stripping, painting, solid oak flooring. I don't like carpet
Bedroom 2 –3.45m x 3.07m - wardrobes, chest of drawers, redecoration including wallpaper stripping painting, solid oak flooring.
Bedroom 3 - 3.07m x 2.01m – wardrbes, chest of drawers, redecoration including wallpaper stripping, painting, solid oak flooring.
Kitchen - 3.5m x 3m - New boiler, New units probably Ikea, tiling, oven, hob, sink, work surfaces, plastering, tiles for flooring, painting.
Bathroom, some cosmetic work is required to attend to a DIY bodged cupboard.
Living room - 4m x 5m - Sofa, redecoration to remove nicotine stained wallpapered ceiling and walls, stripping and redecoration painting throughout, solid oak flooring and fitting, removal of very old three bar gas fire, fitting of wood burning stove and all that entails.
Hall/stairs/landing - redecoration including wallpaper stripping, solid oak flooring.
Garden low level retaining walls/paving/gravel/fencing.
Extension – to rear of the kitchen to include wc/utility space, 2 x 2m.

Not sure if I can get all of this for my budget, what order to get work done. I have no idea how much it will all cost and what I need to forget about. The wiring, heating and windows are ok. I am in the midlands.

I have 10k for my new house and its 4 bedrooms it needs new carpets on top floors and stairs and new flooring throughout downstairs
A new kitchen we priced ikea one for 2.5k and my husband will fit it.
A new bathroom doing its for 1.5k hopefully.
Painted throughout and living room ceiling replastered.
New blinds.
Wardrobes for the bedroom
And new beds for the kids rooms.
New dining room table and chairs.
And hopefully that will be it :-/

Bought lovely orla kiely wallpaper for my hallway, and Ferm living wallpaper for my sons room already and bought all new bedding etc already .

So you plan on spending 6k on carpet for 4 bedrooms and hall/stairs and landing, flooring for downstairs. Painting throughout, plastering, blinds, wardrobes for four bedrooms, beds for three bedrooms, dining table and chairs.

Where are you going to source it all? Is your DH going to do the carpet fitting/decorating/furniture building like the Kitchen/bathroom?

Lol no hoping to have change from the 10k if possible and be able to put money aside for further things that crop up, I always think once you start renovating/ decorating you end up spending more than you think.

14k is a great budget I think,
Our windows , doors boiler and radiators , roof and walls are all in good nick so it's mostly modernising except the bathroom and kitchen .

We considered putting French doors in at the back of our dining room if we have any money left.

We know a carpet fitter and plan to go to local carpet shop that is really reasonable,my dad is in the decorating trade so cheap paint also.

I really don't know, and am trying to set a budget at present.

First job; rewiring throughout.

Then connect to gas, replace bolier and heating systems.

Then kitchen extension....

Hmm well we have a wreck that needs lots of work and barns we are extending into.

So far we've had a complete rewire and new central heating ( new boiler and new rads in all rooms 10 in all) that cost us getting on for £15,000.

We are having all window refurbished (next few weeks) some with new double glazed wooden sashes that's another £6000.

We have plans in with the council and are about to go out to tender for the bulk of the work, but know it will cost more than we want it to cost.

I've had 2 costs for a new wood burner in the sitting room both coming in around £5000, it's too much, I've got another person coming at the weekend I'm hoping to pay more like £3000/35000.

I'm think people see an old wreck of a house and just add ££££

Are there tiles similar to these available elsewhere for less?

I also like this wood flooring and wondered if I could buy this cheaper elsewhere?

We're having two woodburners plus one new mantelpiece put in for around £5000 (for both, including chimney lining).

Deliberating about windows, whether to refurb or get sec glazing, but expecting to spend at least £5000.

Also need new guttering and brickwork plus some drain work and tree surgery to fix sagging extension - waiting for quotes but it won't be cheap.

Hence no money left to decorate so we are painting rooms ourselves, which is slow but satisfying. Need to get some curtains as well - thermal lined so also not cheap...

Just trying to get the house in order before the worst of the winter weather hits...

We have a budget of £100k which seems huge but it's got to go a long way.
We've bought a big Victorian semi.
Big jobs are new boiler, TRVs & cylinder, rewire electrics, new alarm & smoke alarms, new DG timber sashes (all 20 of them), new kitchen, knock loo & bathroom into 1, then new bathroom suites, new utility. Decorate throughout.
New floors, new curtains, new lights
Small extension to freestanding garage, new shed
As I said it's got a long way to go.

It'scold could I ask a little about rewiring.

First, what do they actually do?
Do you have your light switches/fittings/sockets replaced?
Is it messy?

How many rooms did you have done for that figure?

We've got about 14K to-

-Possibly relocate boiler
-Strip wallpaper from living room, dining room, sitting room, three beds, hall and landing and redecorate - Anyone know if we can just redecorate or will need to skim the walls too?
-remove horrible electric fire and make good
-Skim kithcen ceiling
-Skim all upstairs ceilings
-buy and fit new kitchen (ikea so hopefully fit this ourselves)
-remove wall between kitchen and diner
-block up door to diner and skim the wall

• oak flooring throughout ground floor and carpets throughout 1st floor

-new bathroom and cloakroom (and fitting unless we can DIY it) -new interal doors and skirting throughout -dining table and chairs, bookshelves, sofa, paint and furnishings

I'd love to fit a log burner too, but in reality I think we will have to abandon the new bathroom, new doors, skimming of ceilings and possibly some of the furniture we want too. Money just doesn't seem to go far doing this type of thing!

I think the rewire was about £5000, but it's an old complicated house so there was lots of chopping into walls, floors up etc etc,

We have new wiring everywhere new sockets, new light switches, dimmers in every room, we bought new ceiling fittings but could not fit down lights anywhere as its all plaster and lath. We haven't done the bathroom yet when we do we will replace the ceiling so that we can have down lights, also have temporary lighting in the kitchen as that room will not be a kitchen in the long run.

New circuit board, wired in smoke detectors and outside lights on a timer.

It was very messy as all rooms had bits of wall chopped out and we were living in the house which was really horrible, we had to go on holiday for a week when the plumbers were in as they just couldn't work around us.

Ideally I would not have lived there but we moved in thinking we could manage but the wiring kept on blowing and it was dangerous so we had to get it sorted.

The house we are in the process of buying is also very old and I suspect not an easy job.

I'm tempted to rent somehwere whilst the re wire is happening by the sounds of it!

Forgot to say its 5 beds, one bathroom, loo, dining room, kitchen, large hall and sitting room.

Yes I wouldn't have chosen to live in it really but we had just unpacked and it was just all too much as our move involved school changes, school runs etc my DCs are teens so they just about cope, but no Internet and computers blowing the lights was not fun.

We are still living in a real mess and it won't get better for a while, actually it will get worse as we intend to start building work on the barn before christmas, but I'm hoping that this time next year the house will be transformed (if we can afford it).

The sad thing is I'm not too keen on where the house is ( yes I know mad!) so I don't think we will be here that long, but who knows things may change.

We have a flat in London where we live for half the time. We'd sort of planned for the kids to stay there with DH and I live in the house to keep an eye on the works.

But I don't want to be there by the sounds of it. Maybe we could wait until Summer next year and then rent a holiday home close by for a few weeks, then DH and I could take it in turns to workmen-sit.

58k total although 25k now and rest to come

8 bed crumbling rectory. It won't go very far do we have to keep earning. Spending so far 8k on bathrooms, 3 on re wire and 4.5 on aga.

We haven't set a budget for the redecoration of a 4 bed house. This includes new kitchens and bathrooms.

Hmmm...2 bed semi with budget of around £20k to do...

Complete rewiring. New double glazing, plus a set of bi fold style patio doors for lounge, but not replacing a second set (dining room) as they are bloody expensive 7ft wide.

Lounge. Take out old fire surround and hearth and strip room, replaster walls and skim ceiling. New flooring ~ probably carpet. Got curtains already, but I will be adding a coloured band to them to add colour to the room.
Dining room. Replastered where water damaged and painted. New roof.
Second bedroom. Repaint. Put down engineered solid wood flooring (already got).
Master bedroom. Strip. Make good the plaster and decorate. Divide room into two smaller rooms with sliding doors for Dc's.
Kitchen (maybe). Paint tiles and unit doors.
Garden. Take down all trees, clear jungle and have first area made into adult sitting area, second part into children friendly area and third part into veggie patch.
Loadsa money...

Or...build a second storey extension for 3rd bedroom with small en suite? with house rewired only (friend to do this for me) for now. Possible on that budget? it'd be roughly 9' x 11'
