Title, kind of says it all but the long version is

I'm 32 weeks pregnant, the babies nursery needs re plastering including the celing doing.
Plasterer advised us to do any insulation in the loft now incase of cracking the new plaster by walking on the celing. Dh spent 2 hours at the weekend emptying out the loft. The loft is full of lose fill insulation.

Dh has suddenly started crapping himself that the insulation is vermiculite and with the house being ancient it insulation is very likely to be pre 1990s and could contain asbestos.

It's just yet another fucking issue we really didn't need. Anyone been in this position, I'm really hoping its just dh panicking over nothing he is one of life's great worriers

There's only one way to find out. Send a sample to this man - he's very fast and it's only £25, I used him a few months ago. I'm sure it will give you peace of mind.

Although there is this idea that you can develop mesothelioma after one exposure to asbestos, I too was really worried about it and did some interneting and it's incredibly rare among people who haven't had sustained exposure - so people working in asbestos factories, demolishing buildings etc - and there's a very strong link to smoking too ie. you're much more likely to develop disease if you have been exposed and are a smoker than if you have been been exposed but don't smoke.

Thanks lala really hope the sample comes back negative. Otherwise it will cost us a bloody fortune to get rid of it.

I secretly wish he hasn't started looking into it, the plan was to just lay some more insulation over the top and leave it alone for the foreseeable future.

Wonder what the chances are of it coming back postive.

before paying £25, you might like to consult your local council.

Unless you live in a factory or a ship it is unlikely you will have asbestos insulation.

Just thought I would update, we did the £25 test (thanks for the link) and there is no asbestos Grin
