I'm doing my futility room, anything I might not have thought of?

In our last house we had a tiny area at the back of the kitchen for laundry, but now we have a whole basement room. I've got the washing machine, tumble dryer and chest freezer in there. I've got some shelving and baskets for laundry. What else do I need?

Hanging rail to hang straight from dryer.

Ironing board and Iron holder on wall.

Basket with clothes brush, small needle and thread box for emergency repairs. (I know I actually do them when Im ironing) hemming tape and spare buttons.

Rail full of hangers - hang as you iron or as soon as its out of the dryer.

Labels for yours, dh, kids stuff so you can say "go put your stuff away" and they know which basket/hangers are theirs.

Tv or radio for time spent down there.

Indoor washing line if there's a radiator in there.

We've got cupboards with batteries, sewing kit, shoe cleaning kit, light bulbs and food (stuff bought in quantity when it's on offer) in ours too.

A sink so you can do hand washing, wash paintbrushes etc without using the kitchen sink you want to use for food.

PareyMortas · 03/09/2013 22:28

That was supposed to be a grin.

I have got the ironing board up, but have to admit to not doing much ironing. Great idea to give member of the family their own basket, they can take them to their rooms and put the contents away. Good point about a wifi signal, will check it. Probably ought to keep a secret stash of chocolate too.

I use my utility room sink for cleaning seed trays, trainers, riding boots etc etc

and for storing the pool table when its not in use Wink

If you are on Pinterest have a look there. Plenty if amazing ideas.

I would have:

  1. Washer and dryer
  2. Pulley for roof
  3. Different linen baskets for different types. Ikea have some with circular holes in the door so you can feed laundry in.
  4. Cupboard full of powders and liquids. I'd probably decant my washing powder and fabric conditioner in to pretty jars. Plus space for sprays like stain removers.
  5. Ironing board space. So it doesn't have to be constantly folded up OR even better a fold down one from the wall.
  6. Socks hangers
  7. Hanging rail
  8. Drawer full of linen bags for delicates

Plus a recycling system
Space for wellies and boots
Sink for hand washing bits

An extension 'ringer' for hearing your doorbell. People ALWAYS come acalling when I'm sorting washing in the basement.

Heated airer from Lakeland. They are brilliant and so cheap to run. Great for the winter.
