Curveball!!

So just had builder and architect visit with regards to an extension...they've thrown in a total curveball which, the longer I think about it, seems to be a no-brained!

My original plan was basic 3x4 box on to back of house and knock through living/dining room to give me large, open plan L shape space downstairs with folding doors out to garden.

They suggest a side extension for dining/kitchen and make current kitchen into 3 bedroom (more likely man room come office!).

A-why didn't I think of that?
B-will it work? Had my original plan in my head for so long now finding it hard to visualise..,

Final quote to follow but at a guess both options will be similar in price and time.

A - sometimes it takes a fresh pair of eyes !
B - will be easier to visualise when you have the drat plans in front of you !
But isn't it nice to have something to look forward to !!! :-)

Totally! And yeah, will sink in when I get plans...we're a corner plot so the side extension will be a wedge shape tapering to the rear...can visualise how units will work, struggling to see how table will fit in though! Off to Houzz app for ideas!

I'm on there ! Search for OnePlan !! That's me !!

Pooh, I will! I have a 'mood board' for at 4 houses lol I love it!

Had a result yesterday...caught up with a colleague who's done up all of her houses, asked if she recommended builder then proceeded to show me her current project...couldn't believe it!! Single storey extension to side of house on corner plot, EXACTLY the same as was suggested to me!!

She's invited me over to have a look at the work in progress Grin

We're currently doing up our house (corner property, semi-detached) and we were very focused on a single storey side extension too. Instead our architect has suggested to have a double storey side extension to give us more utility/practical space and that's what we're currently building.

Our original plan was to stick a box on the back to create a kitchen/diner and use the old kitchen as a utilit/downstairs lav. Somehow we've ended up redoing the loft conversion, and agreeing building a two storey side and rear extension and ending up with an extra bedroom, two extra bathrooms and a massive utility (not to mention three metres of floor to ceiling hall cupboards). It's not that I'm unhappy with the plans as they've changed (I think it will be amazing once it's finished) but it is costing approximately three times what I had originally budgeted.

Eeek! Can't afford for budget to run away with me like that lol....

It sounds good to me but it is worth considering cost and planning permission. Do you have enough land for a larger extension. It's so hard to imagine these things on mn. We need floor plan abilities for this section.

And as for houzz app. I love you! (And I suspect dh will hate you Grin)

Lol @ Gibber...it's highly addictive Grin

I built the box along the back in the 1990s. Over the years it has been a family room/den/home cinema/study etc. It's good to sit in it and overlook the garden.

I don't regret leaving the kitchen where it always has been. It's more important to have the large flexible 3rd 'reception' room that the extension provides.
