Where's your laundry? Utility room or kitchen?

Hi we have recently moved and are in the process of getting a new kitchen and trying to decide where to put our washing machine and tumble dryer. In our last house we had them in the kitchen and in this house we have a small utility room made rom partitioning off the back of the garage with shelving and cupboards and space for the wm and dryer. You accessitbyfgoing out the back door and along a short pathway.
Dh would like to incorporate the washer and dryer into the kitchen as he doesn't like the idea of going outside in the winter and rain and snow etc (he does most of the laundry :) ) I prefer it to be in the utility room as I don't want the kitchen cluttered up with dirty laundry baskets etc i don't want to losecupboardspacefor wm anddryerin the kitchen

What you do? What do you think is the best option utility room or kitchen??

Utility room every time.

tywysogesgymraeg · 25/08/2013 09:51

I wouldn't want to have to go outside to do the washing either.
I'd vote for kitchen.

prettypleasewithsugarontop · 25/08/2013 09:52

Ours is in the kitchen, we don't have space for a utility though

MrsBungle · 25/08/2013 09:53

Utility room here. I also have a Laundry chute from upstairs into the utility room, I bloody love it.

Leaves more cupboard space in the kitchen.

7to25 · 25/08/2013 10:23

Is there no way that the utility space can be accessed from the house?
I sort of agree with you both!

Arisbottle · 25/08/2013 10:32

I agree with you both. Our utility room is upstairs , so clothes stay upstairs.

trixymalixy · 25/08/2013 10:34

Utility room

ours is in the bathroom (big bathroom!)

In our new house - if we ever get there - we will have a utility space like you describe in the garage, although we will have a connecting door from the kitchen to the garage so we won't get wet. At the moment we don't have space for a tumble dryer, but previous owner had one in the shed so there is power/light/vent etc. I've never bought one because I didn't want to trail out to a dirty shed in the rain to get my washing dry.

If your DH does most of the washing, surely its mostly his choice?

racingheart · 25/08/2013 11:08

Whoever does the laundry gets to decide.

NoComet · 25/08/2013 11:15

I'd love my washer in the kitchen, because it's in DHs study and he works from home part of the time.

I'm certain the 'study' was built as a utility room given the plumbing. When we bought the house it was a bedroom for grandpa and their washer was in the kitchen. We nicked that plumbing for a dishwasher.

As for your house OP, I'd do washer in kitchen, drier in shed. Combi washer driers are useless.

GrendelsMum · 25/08/2013 11:24

This probably won't work at all for you, but we have a laundry cupboard off the kitchen. It's large enough to have a washing machine, tumble dryer and a whole load of shelving, plus space for the laundry basket to live there under the shelving.

FishfingersAreOK · 25/08/2013 11:41

I would say it depends (helpful)
If you have a kitchen dining space and spend time in the kitchen then you will not want to hear the washing machine going whilst doing paperwork/eating etc....so then def put in utitlity.

If is just cooking washing space then maybe think of what stuff you could put in garage/utility space so you would not begrudge the cupboard space. And consider dryer/sheilas maid in utility?

I wouldn't want the washing machine in a place that involved going outside the house. Imagine it's pouring with rain but you need to get washing done.

We're renting and the house has a back porch accessed from the kitchen with the washing machine in the porch. I like it because it means the tiny kitchen doesn't need to have a washing machine in it and I can shut the door between the kitchen and porch to shut out the noise of the machine whilst having easy access to it. It has a large shelf over the machine which I use for storage but also for the laundry basket and washing powder.

MortifiedAdams · 25/08/2013 11:50

Having to go outside to do the laundry would deter.me.from.ever doing it.

As he does the lions share of it, he gets the say, in my book.

Periwinkle007 · 25/08/2013 12:14

I would LOVE to get the washing machine out of my kitchen because it is noisy and as you say you could have another cupboard there.

We have a tumble drier in the garage. our reason for this is it is the only place we could fit one in.

is it annoying to go out to use it - yes it is, especially when raining or when you forget you have put it on so don't go and empty it etc but I would rather have one in the garage than not have one at all.

ideal world would be to have it inside obviously but it isn't possible.

I am not sure I would want the washing machine out there as well though because that is more of a hassle. I don't always use the tumble drier so it isn't as much of a pain.

doesn't help you at all but i agree that whoever does the washing the most should get to make the decision. perhaps split it like we have so you only lose 1 cupboard for the washing machine

MrsTaraPlumbing · 25/08/2013 12:22

Utility room if possible would be my choice even though going outside is a drag. I do the laundry in my house and the washing machine seems to be going all times of day and night.

I would rather go out in the garden than sort the dirty washing in the kitchen, not to mention that I am always spilling various laundry products on the floor!

BarbaraWoodlouse · 25/08/2013 12:30

We've just built a utility room and I love it. Though now I'm Envy of the laundry chute.

MummytoMog · 25/08/2013 12:34

Our Tumble dryer is in the garage as there's no room for it in the kitchen. It was a bit of an arse to carry wet laundry in the snow from the back door to the garage door, but I do prefer being able to dry clothes in there. If we ever get our extension started, we're having a big utility room off the kitchen for laundry and cleaning stuff.

wonkylegs · 25/08/2013 13:12

A utility room was a must on our househunting list. It doesn't need to be big just separate,
