Relocate from Portsmouth to Pembroke - good idea/what should I think about?

Hi All

Me and my fiancé are thinking of relocating to Pembroke in Wales from Portsmouth and I would like some opinions and advise about what I should think about/look into.

My fiancé works for Tesco and will have no trouble in relocating to a store in the area (+ due to his type of contract he will also take the same wage with him). This would leave me to find a job in administration probably part time rather than full (currently work in a letting agency but have worked in lots of other roles reception/clerk etc).

I have already had a rough look at house prices and for the price of my current 2 bed house in Pompey I could comfortably afford a 4 bed house for the same.

A lot of my fiancé family live in the area and we would have a good support network but all of my family are from Portsmouth.

I have been on holiday to the area and really enjoyed the slower pace of life, beautiful villages and the open spaces.

What are people's though on the idea? What else should I consider?

Thanks,

LittleMissSpeedy

No advice really but I am very jealous! Love Pembrokeshire and know it very well (have holidayed there every year since before I was born!).

just came back from a holiday there. no advice but was really beautiful!

My advice would be to rent first. Pembrokeshire, especially near the coast is lovely but dire in the winter. My son moved there and once Sept/Oct came everything shut down and he was so glad he had rented and could move easily.

Pembrokeshire is lovely. Wages are very low though, and there are fewer 'proper' jobs and more seasonal/summer only, so make sure you've sorted out employment before you move - enough income to support the lifestyle you plan to have. Friends of mine moved there a couple of years ago, and both have taken substantial pay cuts (40% down on pervious local authority management job, and 20% down on building trades job)... They had hoped to work part time and enjoy the sea/beach lifestyle, but that hasn't been possible.

Pembroke is also a long way from everywhere else - but I guess Portsmouth is too!

Thanks for that treesntrees and flow4. I had thought about renting first which I quite like but OH not as convinced.

We would easy to rent out my house now and it would more than cover the mortgage during the rental period until we decide to stay and buy or not.

I agree the biggest thing would be the employment. The OH should have no problem transferring providing the position is available. Which would just leave me to find work. I would only have to be part time (say 20hrs per week) and we would be quite comfortable money wise (as I mentioned where ever he goes providing is the same position he will get the same wage). I would prefer admin work but being honest I could quite happily work in a supermarket as well.
