Dark, v dark blue ceiling in a small, magnolia-coloured room???

Would this look awful?

I want to re-create the night sky in my DS's room, his room is fairly small (about 3mx3m or 9x9) and the ceiling is about 7ft high.

He's really into 'space' at the moment, so I wanted to put the constellations on the ceiling for him.

Good idea, or baaaad?

It will be a nightmare to paint over it when you want to change ... And you'd have to scrape the constellations off first too ?!? Why not get a constellation lamp instead ... IWantOneOfThose does some - they shine onto a plain white ceiling - same effect - less effort ?!?!

I wouldn't. What about a starry fabric up there? You can take it back down when you realise how awful it is. Sorry,

We did exactly this for DS1 when he was about 5. He loved it.

We didn't have the problem of getting rid of it though as we sold the house with starry sky ceiling in situ 5 years later .

It's only paint!! Decent couple of white out coats when you want to change it, no worries. I've just done just that to a previously navy bedroom. It's like the driven snow in there now!

Do it, it will be beautiful. Paint some gold and solver stars on too, whatever you want your son to lie and look at. I'd write some messages too in those gorgeous silver pens you can get.

It's not about the resale value! It's making something beautiful for your son to tell his kids about.

Yes Jassy- I am not going to be moving ever again for another 7 years at least!

Monty- I cannot find a proper fabric with true constellations on it, which is a blow (was wanting to do the curtains, then saw a leetle tester pot of deep navy reduced in Homebase... and was inspired!)

Wookies- the only constellation lamp I;ve seen, whilst being utterly beautiful, was £978, and that's a little out of my budget at this moment in time! Will have a look on there, thanks for the rec!

Hadn't mentioned, it's also a textured ceiling - don't know if this makes a difference? (might make it v hard to do)

He's 4 and a half btw, so he'll not get 'too old' for it for quite a while yet.

I did something similar for my DD but painted the background more of a sky blue as I thought a really dark colour would feel too oppressive in her small room. The stars were painted in gold using stamps and looked really good against the blue, although I did more random patterns, rather than actual constellations. As she got older, she added some of her own 'glow in the dark' ones.

there's an app that you can hold your tablet or smart phone up and get accurate views of the stars and planets - might be nice to view them together at bedtime either each night or once a week (as they change ) - in addition to how you decorate - stippled ceiling might be a problem ?! why not see if you can buy bolster wood ( it's very light weight ) in largest sheets - A0 size I think is still available - so 4 of those should be big enough - paint them and screw them into the ceiling ! when / if you move just plug the screw holes !?!?

We've just painted DDs bedrom ceiling a mid blue. We're not doing true constellations, but I will be blu tack glow in the dark stars up. You can buy small pots of glow in the dark paint, so you could paint constellations. (might try finding some gold and a stamp after reading Troubledjo's post!) During the day it looks deep sky blue, but at night with minimal lighting it looks darker. It covered very easily when I accidentally splodged white paint on it, so I have no concerns that it'll be hard to get rid of.

The texture might be a bit tricky. You could either board it over as TheWookiesWife suggests. You could get it skimmed, but that won't be cheap. You could use that awful smooth over stuff (I do NOT reccomend this!) Or, you could just paint over it as is and possibly use the pointy bits as part of the design by painting the very tips white, or glow in the dark, with the constellations painted much bigger. It could be very effective if during the day you can only see the constellations, but at night they glow, and hundreds of tiny stars become visible. I don't envy you the task of painting it though!

We painted DD's bumpy ceiling mid blue and put stars up. She loved it. DH did do a bit of swearing when he was painting it magnolia 15 times a couple of years ago though.

I like the idea of doing it on panels wookieswife- would be far easier to paint the design on too.

Will look at the practicalities
