building survey question

Can you expect a decent service from any RICS building surveyor or is finding a surveyor like finding an electrician or plumber, i.e. preferable to go with a recommendation?

To be a member of the RICS, surveyors have to go through a rigorous programme of training and assessment so I would say that as long as your surveyor is chartered you should be fine. Personal recommendation is always a plus though.
