Dado rail up the stairs?

Our stairs is between 2 walls, on one side there will be a dado rail, but what happens on the side where the hand rail is? We are looking at a hand rail which sits off the wall, like this one dh says that you would cut hols on the dado rail for the hand rail fixings??? Any other ideas?

Won't the hand rail just be on one side, the opposite side to the dado rail? You don't need hand rails both sides, do you?

Or are you saying both walls have dado rails?

The handrail should be level with the dado, one on either side.

you can get a solid wooden handrail, slightly "J" shaped*, from a timber merchant. It is screwed direct to the wall with no brackets so is far stronger and less likely to break off when you grab it as you are falling downstairs.

It is an advantage to have the screw heads accesible on the under-part so you can remove it when redecorating.

If you have a narrow staircase between walls, as found in sone Victorian terraces, it would look neater to have a handrail each side, a dado will be useless.

  • On your website they call it a pigs ear handrail.

Thank you, I was getting confused, dh said that there needs to be a dado rail both sides of the stair case, which I wasn't sure about, with the hand rail being one side an' all
So would you just dado upto the hand rail then re start at the top of the stairs?

I think a hand rail on both sides will look neater, and will have a practical use.

If the dado rail is to give a boundary between two decorative finishes, a pigs ear handrail will fulfill that purpose and can be painted the same colour as the dado.

IMO a pigs ear is better looking and less in the way than the rails you illustrated, as well as being far far stronger, so more functional.

Thanks piglet I think that is the better option, but so annoyingly you can't buy them in b&q etc
Looks like its online only!
