Kids playing out in the street...

Would be grateful for views about whether I am pursuing a "pipe" dream...

We love where we live. However, although its not a busy road it's not a quiet cul de sac, either.

I would love to see the DCs playing outside on the street in bikes etc like we all did. But do people really let their kids do this now? Or only in quiet cul de sacs on estates?

If you let your kids play out, do you live on an estate?

ours do - but it's a country village ! but it still worries me when I see the speed of some of the cars passing through !

Mine played in the road. All of a sudden there were twelve children on the road aged 11 to 15. They roller bladed and skated, chatted and sat on the kerb.
Never football, once or twice a tennis ball appeared and that was soon removed. (Just to save our cars).

You see it less and less :(

Why not spend the weekend driving slowly around any of the areas that you think you might like to move to and go up all the quite streets - see if you can see any kids playing out :)

The kids in my street play in the street , mainly bikes. Not an estate, but cul de sac in village centre.

Chipping - I have done some drive bys and don't see many kids - but lots of "no ball games" signs....

A country village would be lovely....

I live in a terraced house-quit-ish road with busy but not main roads either end of the street.
When they hit about 6/7 I let mine out on the pavement(front door opens straight onto pavement) with the door open & strict instructions not to go on the road & not to past house x & y in opposite directions.
Rules very slowly relaxed as they got older!
Now my younger DD who is 13 goes all over the estate as long as she keeps me informed of where she is via mobile phone! Older DD is 14 & special needs so not too many friends locally as school is a long way away!!

The only rule was that they had to stay on our road, no going round the corner, that way there were always eyes on them!

It could happen again if the same age cluster occurs. However,as everywhere, the road has got more traffic. Which reminds me, that one would always shout 'car'.

the shout car here too ( or tractor !! ) so they seem to have that bit built in ! and I do notice the bigger kids look out for the smaller ones too ! must be instinctive !

There is a cul de sac in my village that kids play on. Adults take it in turns to sit on a chair at the entrance as a just in case thing. Seems to work. Happy kids and relaxed adults.

We are on a cul de sac and the only kids who are old enough play outside on their bikes. If mine were a bit older (and more sensible) I'd let them play out too. Tiny cul de sac though, only ten houses round a roundabout.

I've recently moved to a cul de sac and there's lots of little kids playing out, daily from 8am until quite late and its starting to piss me off! Especially when I'm on nights and trying to sleep!

My two rarely go out there which surprised me when we first moved here

They go out to play round here from about 7 or 8. Bikes and scooters, rounders and football, chalking the pavements, making dens. It is one of the reasons we moved here. I think kids are less likely to play in the road than we were because there are mostly too many cars. So I think you need to look for somewhere with a bit of green space. Not necessarily a park but just a bit of empty ground.

I actually think a lot of kids do still play out these days, it just depends where you live. We discussed this at my work recently and 3 of us with primary age children all living in different suburbs of a big city said our children played out.
