Kitchen floor advice needed

We're doing up our 5.5x2.8m kitchen in a Victorian terrace. White gloss units, wooden worktop is current plan. We have a dining area at one end with a wooden table. Thoughts so far: wood would look too much with already having wood worktop and table, tiles might be to cold and hard for children, laminate is mainly wood effect... Help! Does that leave me with a tile-effect laminate? Would that be ok and if so, where can I find some nice ones? All ideas welcome

karendean is like amtico by 2/3rds the price !

Rubber, it's hard wearing, comfy and warm. Just put it in my bathroom and wish I had put it in the kitchen instead of tiles.

What about a small amount of underfloor heating under the tiles, to cover the area you walk on?

we used both amtico and karndean and cant really see a difference between them. people have also asked us where we got our wooden floors it looks so realistic.

Slate? I love the look on floors. Wite units would lighten it up.

Another vote for karndean. A doddle to keep clean and warm unlike tile which I've had before .

My mum has karndean. It looks like wood effect Lino, it's got that orangey hue. Try and avoid that!

I had cream porcelain tiles on the floor with DS it was fine. No colder than the laminate on concrete subfloor we had in old house.
I had cream large format tiles with grey grout and it was an amazingly forgiving floor in terms of cleaning. Even after 10yrs of my slack housekeeping regime it still looked brand new when we left.
Our new house has grey slate effect tiles that will be being ripped out asap as they are dark, dingy and horrible to clean.

my karndean doesn't have a orangey hue or look like lino or laminate, it's gorgeous!

Just get the right karndean and it looks great. My sister has just had a slate effect floor made from amtico.

We live in a draughty edwardian house and often have extreme weather. We're getting karndean as I need something warm and tough on the floor.

We have slate coloured Marmoleum. I've used it in three kitchens, and 2 bathrooms now, and love it. Marmoleum

Thanks for all the suggestions - will look into getting a tile/slate effect karndean. Is it tricky or pricey to have put in?

Just out of interest, why would a stone effect karndean be better than a stone effect laminate? What are the main advantages?

It sounds like we're having the same kitchen put in and have had the same dilemma. I went for the "luxury vinyl" route but chose Polyflor Camaro instead of Karndean (it's made by the same people but is cheaper - each range have different styles too).

Main dif in quality is the thickness - you get this within brands too. So Karndean cheapest range ("Knight", I think) is 3mm thick (same as Camaro) whilst top end ("Da Vinci"?) is 7mm.

Make sure you price check online - we saved £700 by buying online rather than in the shop (£13.50 per sq m instead of £25).

And expect fitting to cost as much as the tiles themselves!
