Old concrete floor in Edwardian house

Our new house has a concrete path out the front that continues through the house through the hallway and then into the playroom (would've been the kitchen back in the day).

The previous owners have put vile yellow laminate in the hallway and royal blue carpet in the playroom.

In an ideal world I'd like either tiles in the hallway and floorboards in the playroom (to match the original floor in the lounge) or just floorboards throughout, but DH says the levels won't be right as the concrete is a 1-2cm higher than the woodedn floor plus also it's tricky to lay wooden floor onto concrete.

The concrete would probably have looked quite nice in it's day, but we're not keen to use it that way now.

What the hell do we do with it?

depends on your budget !
...big bucks - have it chopped out - re screed lower down and then have new wooden flooring fitted .
...slightly smaller bucks - have wood effect tiles laid over it . will give the look of wood - but durability if tiles . ( or Karndean / amtico type product )
... no bucks - get stick on vinyl floor planks from warehouse type DIY shop ! cheap as chips can fit it yourself !
trawl around trash and treasure shops for vintage rugs to plonk on top !!

well - that's how I would probably tackle it !! :-)

... you can stain concrete - it's another option - will need a specialist to do it ?!?! no idea on price I'm afraid !!

Thanks Wookie.

Would normal tiles be ok on top of concrete? We would like something along these lines: pinterest.com/pin/80431543318434850/

The playroom floor is then what's outstanding... The way DD chucks food/milk/bogies about I'm really anti-carpet for in there, plus we're thinking of knocking down some walls to open the playroom and kitchen up more into the existing extension so I would want the same lovely floor (preferably floorboards throughout) that whole space.

Actually, I may tap you up for some advice on that part over on Houzz if poss.

hi ! beautiful tiles ! works so well in there as the rest is white washed ! is that the look you are going for maybe ? if not white washing it may start to look too busy - play it by ear ! HAHAHA Bogies !! that brings back memories - my girls are 22 and 12 now !!!
