Bought a house, not moved in yet but now really scared if we made the right decision

I haven't been sleeping properly for days. It all started just before exchange of contracts and I had major wobbles. To cut a long story short, I felt like I had no option but to proceed. DH is really looking forward to the move - we have been in rented for a while. It has cost us a lot of money but I've enjoyed renting. It has been hassle free and we have been able to spend lots of time as a family, going out at weekends etc without having DIY etc.

I feel so mixed up ...

if you've exchanged it is way too late, so worrying about it is pointless.

house ownership does not mean every weekend doing loads of DIY!

I thought I might settle after exchange but if anything I feel worse, sick to the stomach in fact.

You are bound to feel anxious - it's a huge life change.

Don't worry about it not being perfect straight away - move in, generally clean the place and then unpack.

Take your time to adjust to your new home and get the feel of it. Every house has it's own character, so get to know yours.

You will not feel settled for some time so expect that. In time you will know what you want to do with the house to make it your own nest, and you will then love it!

My DH & I bought our own house 4 years ago (I am 55 and this was my first house purchase, so no spring chickens). This house was in a dreadful state and it has been hard graft even getting it up to scratch, and at times immensly stressful. BUT it has also been the most tremendous fun and totally exhilerating (sp) to have a home of our own to do with as we will!!

I hope you enjoy it after a while !! Good Luck!!

I had his exact feeling when purchasing my house. After exchange it felt like I had made a huge mistake, I felt like crying and I just wanted to pull out. Now that I'm there, I love it. I have made it my own and I don't regret it for a second.
Remember, it's a huge purchase and your bound to feel this way.

You are just having a wobble at the start of this daunting change, it is a huge undertaking but it is done now so you need to force yourself to put your thoughts and energy into something useful, like settling in. Renting does not make financial sense and in time you will know you did the right thing. Good luck and don't moan, make it a happy home.

holiday, I have felt like that for the last couple of weeks... Terrified, worried and sleepless - no more than 5 hours a night for a fortnight. But we moved in yesterday, and I've woken feeling fine - pleased and excited, actually. I reckon you'll be fine! :)

I felt like this when we bought our first house, and now we're looking to move, I feel like this again! It's not surprising really when you think that this is the biggest and most expensive thing anyone will ever buy

Thanks all - I'll try to focus on the positives and will update my post when we've moved in. I think I'll feel better when it is done and out of the way. I've been really happy in the rental house too which makes the move harder in a lot of ways.

Yes that won't help either holiday. We love the house we're in and will be very sad and reluctant to move, but we must keep focusing on what we want in our "forever" home that we can't have here

The buying process is so stressful. I got real tunnel vision about the surveys with both our houses - all these things that MUST be done within prescribed time periods, all the new appliances etc we were responsible for. But then actually you move in, and the house doesn't fall down immediately because you haven't replaced the wobbly gutter or whatever, and generally speaking boilers and ovens carry on working. Actually living in a house is a much more relaxing experience than buying it!

Update: I got the keys today and ..... I am so pleased. I think we made the right decision. My mind had distorted things so much. The neighbours seem really nice too and I couldn't be happier. Thanks so much for your support
