I need to buy one for an island hob and have no idea what I'm looking for as never had one before. What do I need to consider? Is there much between the cheaper and high end models?

Are you looking to extract or recirculate - as if extract - you will need to consider how you will get the air to an outside wall ... An installer will be able to guide you on this ! You do get what you pay for - the cheaper ones tend to be noisier then the more expensive ones. If you have more turns and longer run to vent to the outside - then you need to have a better powered hood to vent efficiently !

Yes it will extract and that has all been designed, up to the ceiling then out through the steel rsj. I just need to decide what to buy as I am buying separately from the kitchen which is already decided. Baumatic seems very cheap but wondering if should avoid because of this?
