Moving gas and electricity meters

Ours are currently under the stairs but I want to convert this space to a fitted storage area with pull out shelving. How easy is it to have them moved? Can they go on the other side of the wall and be external? We are planning a big renovation project to include loft conversion, new upstairs bathroom and (phase 2) kitchen extension, new kitchen and family room. Should we wait and have to meters resited as part of the building work??

yes, but it will be surprisingly expensive and slow to arrange, and it can only be doe by the company that owns them, not by you or your electrician or gasman.

You are not expected to know who owns them; if you send a very short businesslike letter to the address on your bill, asking for a price, that company has a duty to pass on your request to the correct company.

Don't expect to get a sensible reply if you phone.

Utility companies like to put meters outside your house in cabinets, so they can read the meters when you are out, and cut off your supply without a court order. If you ask them if they would like to move your meters to such a position they will be more keen to help.
