Painting over previously-painted bathroom tiles

Our ensuite bathroom has 'interesting' décor - really tacky! - but is really low down the list of priorities to tackle. The large wall tiles have all been painted JET BLACK and look hideous!

Would a white tile paint work over the black? This would be a temporary solution until our finances permit a proper refit but would make the room less cave-like!

Yes, probably! Just don't want to make a mistake so that it looks even worse!!

We painted over bathroom tiles in the previous house and I would never have it again.
For a start the paint is really really toxic and difficult to apply. It also scratches easily and looks awful because the underneath shows through.

Do you know what's under the black paint? Would it be better to try to remove the paint rather than trying to paint over it?

Good question, Slainte. No, I don't. I'm almost afraid to investigate! How would I go about removing the tile paint?

You can get tile paint stripper from B&Q etc. But keep everything covered as It also strips the enamel of baths etc. Even if you don't like the tiles under the paint, once it's stripped new tile paint will apply better to the bare tile.

Get some Kling Strip online - non toxic paint stripper, cover with plastic, peels off in a satisfying lump.

do a tile to find out what's under there, then if it's harvest mice shit you can lightly sand the other tiles for a key and use any gloss you like to cover them
