Can't decide on light switches

I've been dithering about replacing the delaightful brass light switches in our house since we moved in. My brother (the sparky) rewired our upstairs lighting circuit yesterday and said that I have to stop dithering and do it now, because there is no earth or back box on the current switches (which is apparently a BAD thing). All things being equal, I would replace with beautiful thirties-esque round nipple switches. however, I am not about to replasted and repaint to make this happen, and am totally skint. So I'm stuck with what can fit in the space of the current square switches (I know we'll have to chase out for the boxes, but I will stand over DB with a chisel to make him do it neatly). I've been looking at toggle switches and rocker switches, and sort of prefer toggle, but basically don't like any switches.

SO all our door furniture is chrome, I guess I could match that? And rounded edges or flat plates? Would it look awful? Will I stop caring ten minutes after they go up? How much do YOU notice light switches? Do I then need to matchy match the plug sockets? Do you have lovely switches you might want to tell me about?

Ack. I'm going to go buy a lav. At least that's a relatively easy decision (what is cheapest and comes with all the innards).
